Remember that time Hyundai cars could be stolen by a teen with a screwdriver? My roommate 's car was stolen by a 16 yr old. Mine was stolen and used to steal 3 more cars at gun point according to the FBI agent that called me.

Fuck Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, and anybody else owned by the same assholes who let this happen.

That’s why it’s not launching in China and not the Roman market.

I don't think that counts as clickbait. The US isn't the only car market, and in any case Americans deserve to see what the international market looks like. Maybe it'll make us start wondering why we don't have $15k EVs available here.

This is funny because every developed nation has regulations for needing immobilisers. Canada has needed immobilisers in cars since 2007 and the Kia theft issue didn't exist.

Only tangentially related but while the cheaper price is promising as a trend you should boycott Hyundai.

The clickbait is that the car would never be priced at $15,000 in the US. Nowhere does the title state it's only in China, nor does it say something like "equivalent cost of $15k".

Since OP truncated the real title, I think it should count.

I don't completely understand how the ownership structure works to understand if you're right or not though.

"The Chinese rollout comes ahead of a planned global launch."

So more accurately, currently only released in China but expected to be sent to Australia next then Europe and possibly Canada.

But no, Magastan won't get it thanks to illustrious leader. File that in the "nice things Americans can't have" box. You may have to shove things around to get it to fit. Box is getting full.

I’m half and half on that. Even my 2003 Chrysler had an immobilizer despite there not being a regulation. So while I can see being upset at the lack of regulation I also fully blame Kia for cheaping out.

This is a Chinese market car, they don't even want to sell it to you. Not sure if Hyundai would even be allowed to produce it outside of China.

While pre-orders are open in China, they’re not open anywhere else… yet. Hyundai acknowledges that China is at the forefront of global mobility, and thinks its entry into the country’s EV market will help it succeed globally. Which means it does want to offer the Ioniq V to worldwide markets, but it doesn’t have a timeline for that yet.

This is entirely speculation with no source on them planning an international release. It's entirely possible they won't be allowed to produce it outside of China.

This is designed and manufactured by their Chinese subsidiary. Like every non-Chinese automaker other than Tesla, they're not allowed to fully own their Chinese subsidiary. Meaning if they sell these in China, BAIC gets 50% of the profit. If they start selling them outside of China, they'd be using a Chinese-sponsored design to compete with Chinese automakers (since they likely wouldn't want to produce and sell through Beijing Hyundai, but rather through Hyundai) globally. They'd probably be punished for that.

But this is also just speculation.

On the interior, the cockpit is centered around a massive 27-inch screen (Hyundai says its a 4K screen, but we’re not sure what that refers to – because 4K is typically 3840×2160, and that screen is certainly not that resolution) and uses two Chinese AI models, from Baidu and ByteDance.

FUCK

THAT

Why wouldn't they use Chinese currency if they weren't trying to deceive? It's pretty common to show something for sale in the market currency with a conversion to the reader's currency.

They even do it further in the article..

Ioniq V 540 Pro – 109,900 yuan (~$16,400).
Ioniq V 540 Max – 119,900 yuan (~$17,900).
Ioniq V 540 Max+ – 129,900 yuan (~$19,400).
Ioniq V 650 Max – 129,900 yuan (~$19,400).
Ioniq V 650 Max+ – 139,900 yuan (~$20,900)

How much does it cost to import a car from China? If there's not an official way to do that can you find a company that will transport a whole shipping container and just pay someone to put the car in it under a bunch of random shit? I feel like the price points on these EVs make that kind of thing worth looking into.

You cant legally drive any car in the US (on public roadways) that is not sold domestically unless it is at least 25 years old. In fact you may not even be able to import it in the first place until 25 years. I cant remember.

Either way, buying one and importing it to use is not an option

Of course, just like all great value EVs, it's only available in China.

Even if it was released in other countries, the price wouldn't be nearly as good. The EU, for instance, slaps a 35% tariff on all Chinese cars, so it'd be easily over $20k, not even including transport costs.

Neat! If I ever need another car, Hyundais are in the top 3 certainly. Tesla has made me get used to very good UX though, I wish Hyundai and other companies would improve in that sense.

edit 27-inch screen? Okay, I guess they're stupidmaxxing instead of fixing problems. Oh well. Good thing I have no need to change.

Another comment says that if foreign car brands want to sell cars in China or maybe make cars in China I'm not sure, they have to have a Chinese subsidiary. This is all more complicated than what I understand.

I wouldn't buy it unless it were like $3000, as I'd have to put up with all the shit distraction features and figure out how to modify the vehicle to be safe to operate and respect my privacy
