Has anyone else had Google Assistant force uninstalled and Gemini installed only for Gemini to be completely useless?

Gemini can't set timers, make reminders(can't connect to "device assistance" with all privacy-invading bullshit enabled).

Is there any other mobile OS that does simple voice commands?

All I want are timers, alarms, date reminders, and apparentlysndroid can't process those anymore.

I'm currently trying to find an alternative as well. Samsung has bixby but i haven't had the chance to look into it yet.

Maybe Dicio but I also haven't had much of a chance to investigate that one either.

Thank you! I tried Gemini before, it was terrible, switched back to assistant. Unceremoniously it's been erased from my system, no warning or rollback and now gemini is useless!

I'll look into bixby and dicio, i appreciate the points in the right direction, i am shocked google is forcing a new assistant on us that can't set timers or alarms, the only google features i used to use.

Little more info on Dicio. It looks like its open source and completely on device which is nice. However, its timers appear to be internal to its own app. It doesn't seem able to set alarms or reminders at this time either.

So I don't think its one that will work for me at its current state.

I refused the user agreement and then it went on and replaced Google Assistant anyway. I wish there was a project developing an alternative firmware for my google and alexa devices.

Dang, I spent all yesterday and some of this morning looking and couldn't find any alternative.

I'm trying to use Gemini, but it is so slow, doesn't recognize any of my voice commands and won't set timers alarms or tasks.

Now I'm trying to find out if I factory reset my phone if there's a way that I can get assistant back and then freeze the updates so that it doesn't get kicked out of the phone again.

Thanks, i checksd Dicio out but my timers that I set just went straight past zero and started going into negative numbers and never let out a chime or anything when the time had expired.

Still, I'm glad to know there is some app with a wake word out there.

No problem, I also did that last year, but this time they've removed the option to switch back to Assistant entirely.

If you still have assistant, i would avoid updating your Google Apps as long as possible.

I tried it a couple of different times when they suggested to install Gemini, and finally they forced it, and I uninstalled Gemini again, and now I have no Google Assistant, and it is completely useless, so I just don't use voice commands anymore.

I gave them feedback in vain each time, but, obviously, like I said, it was in vain. So, here we are, another product added to the Google Graveyard.

It's pretty inconvenient, but I think it's actually a blessing because it's helping to push me away from Google and move me over to Home Assistant instead, something that actually will continue to be supported as long as people continue to use it, unlike Google's products, that just vanish for no reason due to their heavy-handed decisions.

Does it still not work?

We have a few Google hub things around the house we use for weather, setting timers, and turning on a light or two.

We USED to be able to ask it quick questions and get reasonable answers. Like, can cats have olives? And we'd get a quick summary like "yes, in small doses, etc".

But now it's been neutered. Ask it the same question and it just says "I don't understand".

Like they're trying to force me into Gemini.

I knew Gemini couldn't do timers and control devices and stuff when it first came out but that was forever ago, I really thought they would've fixed it by now.

So I guess I'm still stuck.

I had the same thing, my assistant kept saying it didn't understand, so i just used it for timers until they kicked it out.

Yes, i can set timers and alarms with Gemini now. After a few days of nothing working, I installed an external clock app, disabled google clock, Gemini could make timers through the new app, then when i enabled the google clock app, Gemini could natively set timers and alarms BUT it's much slower than assistant was, at least 8 seconds of delay for any request, which is particularly frustrating after knowing assistant didn't have that delay, and the Gemini UI looks, sounds and feels very incomplete.

I'm sure you're right they nerfed assistant to force users into Gemini, and Gemini answers questions like assistant used to, but its a far inferior product.
