This is going right into my D&D campaign! The bees are a hivemind that builds nests on the heads of gargoyles and animates them. They were created by a maniacal, bee-obsessed alchemist who planned to use the gargoyles to assassinate the royal family and take over. He was killed by his own creation after a demon made the hivemind uber-intelligent and gave them a new mission of destroying an order of LG monks. When the demon perished in that battle, the now leaderless hivemind fragmented into smaller entities - carnivorous and chaotic evil. They scattered throughout the land, each bent on causing death and mayhem. Their standard attack mode is to swarm an opponent, inflicting hundreds of venomous stings that collectively kill within a few rounds. Then they consume the body as food. The small amount of honey they produce is a highly toxic nerve poison, prized by the few assassins who know of it.
