This flipper zero app enables you to tamper with ESLs:

Writing to them would of course be useful, but simply reading the tags could be quite useful too. As we get hit with personalised pricing and prices of goods fluctuate like stocks, it would be useful to grab prices programmatically as we walk through the store. The prices get fed to a DB to build a price history. This has a couple benefits:

  • it could alert you when something you buy regularly is cheaper than recent history
  • when a store ad says “today it’s $5 (normal price: $10)”, your DB can confirm whether the ad is lying about the normal price

Personally I've just been swiping the tags. Just pop it off the track and drop it in the trash on my way out. Eventually it won't be worth it to have them.

I don't know what kind of designs they're using for this dynamic pricing shit, but I do know about the Flipper.

They are really solid hardware with a bit of a gimmicky presentation standing between it and an incredible community. It's extremely flexible and provides raw access to just about every kind of infrared/RF/NFC/wireless/wired protocol you could ever imagine trying to hook it up to. Many of the aforementioned protocols have limited or no security, relying mainly on security through obscurity and cost-prohibitive and restricted-access hardware to control other devices using this protocol. And the Flipper is comparatively non-cost-prohibitive and supports being configured by software to do exactly the same things as most of the cost-prohibitive, restricted-access technology that gatekeeps these protocols. You can do the math and put the pieces together, I hope.

I can tell you mine is sitting in front of me on my desk right now ready to go, I don't intend to use it often but it's useful to have when I need it. I'm not sure what else to tell you.

That's cool to find out. I never would have imagined them being legit but I'm kind of glad to hear it.

No, that's exactly what I was wondering. Thanks for chiming in
