🌊 In 1905, Maxime Maufra (1861–1918) turned his gaze to the harbour at Sauzon, one of the iconic villages of Belle-Île-en-Mer. In this light-filled scene, the painter captures the peaceful atmosphere of a small Breton harbour, with its moored boats, colourful houses and shifting reflections on the water.

Through this work, he reveals the unique character of an island which, from the end of the 19th century onwards, became a major source of inspiration for artists.

From the 1880s onwards, Belle-Île attracted numerous painters captivated by the power of its landscapes, its wild coastlines and the ever-changing light. Claude Monet stayed there in 1886 and produced a significant series of paintings dedicated to the island.

A few years later, Maxime Maufra, in turn, became part of this tradition of painters who came to Brittany in search of new ways of depicting nature.
