$6,800 in 1970 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $58,707.84 today.

Given that my last build when it was GPU's that were wildly overpriced landed around $3500, we're just about tracking back to that price. Adjusting for inflation, however... over $58k.

The job my mom started with. I’m old enough to have seen a telex machine working.

Women were often the main typists leading up to this era (it's true, look into it; they had buildings full of women sitting in front of typewriters) so is there any correlation to this advertisement featuring a woman? By the early 80s, computers were mainly advertised to businessman for personal bookkeeping.

I'm a feminist so don't come at me bro, and this is a genuine question.

Edit: Telex. I should've looked into it further. I'm not familiar but it seems like this is what led to the curiosity which allowed the personal computer, in a mainstream setting.

That's almost enough for a month's worth of clean drinking water in 15 years.

I think a lot of tech was tedious mental labor for which women were recruited: think ordering punch cards, calculations, etc. I think it was only in the 1980s with the PC that they started getting pushed out of the programming field.

But I think this woman is here because the people who bought the machines women worked on were exclusively men.

If women were once viewed as lesser and given tedious tasks for being viewed as such; and now everyone that doesn't have an impressive net-worth is being used for the same menial tasks.. does this make the magnificent woman equal now, or have those that weren't before considered to do these tasks less than they once were?

A telex operator wasn't a computer. A computer is someone who does calculations. A telex operator types and sends messages.

Hahaha man, there was not even a screen. Seriously, it looked almost like a normal typewriter. The only difference was the perforated tape reader next to it.
