But over the last few weeks the mood music from Silicon Valley has been decidedly sombre, as insider after insider has warned of the potential catastrophes that could result from “loss of control” of the most advanced AIs.

While I'm against wasting more of the global GDP on AI development, the 'fears' about 'losing control' is just the cover story for Silicon Valley being pressured by their investors to stop hemorrhaging money and find a way to make LLMs profitable.

China pulling ahead of Silicon Valley in the AI race would significantly diminish the value of the entire American AI industry. Aside from any profitability concerns Chinese companies may have, China has every incentive to continue investing in their own AI models.
