But officials tell Border Report that the military surge comes after Coast Guard personnel were shot at from Mexico while patrolling the Rio Grande in Starr County last month.

A U.S. Coast Guard official told Border Report: “On Sept. 26, Coast Guard Forces Rio Grande personnel encountered gunfire from the Mexican border in the vicinity of Garceño, Texas while conducting joint interdiction operations with federal partners on the Rio Grande. Coast Guard personnel returned fire. No injuries to Coast Guard, or other personnel were reported.”

On the U.S. Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley Sector’s Facebook page, the agency has a video that says “Never touch America’s boats.” And it warns “Cartels consider this your notice. Any threat to us or our partners will be met with overwhelming force.”
