LG SOTD - 2026-10-08
Theme: Throwback Thursday - Executive Man was my first shave soap. About the time that I started wetshaving, I had just started a new job with much more responsibility than previous jobs. Previously, I would only shave occasionally and when I did I'd usually just mow it down with clippers. In the transition, I needed to be more presentable more often. Executive Man fit right it. Unfortunately, I don't have the matching aftershave on hand. Is it crazy to stack a chypre with an oriental citrus (Floïd)? Nope. The citrus notes on EM and Floïd make a decent combination. Oakmoss in both scents make it great. Daily Challenge: Flip it and reverse it - Nope. Not going to do it. Post shave goes thin to thick with powder on top. Anything else is mayhem. |

October 8th, 2026: old
The year was 2020. Things were happening in the world. The president was suggesting maybe we should inject disinfectant, and people were drinking bleach. I had some time off work, so I decided it was a good time to learn this new wetshaving skill. This soap was one of the very first things I bought. I ordered it on 11/29/2020 making it 5.86 years old. My first order was from Stirling and it was a bunch of samples which are now gone. This tub of soap I haven't managed to kill yet, mostly because the scent on it isn't my cup of tea, so I hardly ever use it :-). This brush is the first brush I ever bought, and I still use it regularly. I ordered it on 7/14/2020 making it 6.24 years old. This razor was my first non-cartridge, non-disposable razor. I bought it from u/thebruhestmoments and I got it on 7/13/2020 making it 6.24 years old (in my possession). It cost me $35. I used a Bolzano, which was one of the first blades I tried. I had ordered a sample pack from Maggard and Bolzano was really the only brand that I ended up liking long-term. I ordered this 100 pack on 9/7/2020 from Razor Blades Club, making the blade 6.09 years old. The aftershave I've had since 11/25/2020, making it 5.87 years old. I won a raffle prize which was "two soap/aftershave sets from The Razor Company". I had to reach out multiple times in order to eventually get my prize, but they sent me a set of RazoRock Puros which is a great tobacco scent, and a set of B&M Lyssa which is a great dirty rose scent. Daily Challenge: I applied some aftershave before I started to lather, but that was about the extent of the effort I was willing to put in to this challenge! I wasn't willing to shave dry, then lather at the end. I also didn't want to start with against-the-grain :-) |

October 8th, 2026: Throwback Thursday
Theme justification - I started wetshaving at the end of 2023 with a Chiseled Face "Standard Shaving Kit." It came with a Baili BR171 razor (which I no longer own), a synth brush (which I no longer own), three tucks of blades (which I have no idea whether I still own), and a Ghost Town Barber set. It blew me away how a relatively cheap setup like this could so significantly improve my shaves. It was off to the races shortly after that. Appropriately, GTB was the first tub of soap I ever killed. The oldest order I could find in my email was also from Chiseled Face on May 11, 2024. It included a sample of Summer Storm, which eventually inspired me to buy the full trifecta. Hence this is my oldest soap. RIP GTB. Gone but not forgotten. I also used my oldest (to me) razor and brush to complement today's theme. Relevant Post Shave or Frag - Summer Storm is citrus, wet earth, petrichor, and moss. Black Bergamot keeps the citrus and swaps the earth for vetiver, and Stirling One pushes the bergamot one more step into cedar and tobacco. All related by scent to my chosen soap. Stirling One and Black Bergamot are also both currently unobtainium, which fits nicely with the Throwback Thursday theme. Daily challenge - I just wanted a good shave after yesterday's cartridge razor fiasco, so I did not do the challenge today. $FOF - Summer Storm is, to me, a summer rainstorm in the desert: orange and lemon up top, then cut grass, pine, and moist earth with some petrichor. In the lather it’s the earth, petrichor, and grass that come through most for me, with a bit of citrus lightly present on top. Black Bergamot is simpler. Bergamot, black pepper, and Haitian vetiver. It picks up the citrus from the lather and swaps the wet earth for the drier, smokier vetiver. Stirling One is a dupe of D&G The One: bergamot, coriander, and basil on top of cardamom, ginger, and neroli, drying into cedar, ambergris, and tobacco. The bergamot links it straight to the splash, and the cedar and tobacco pick up where the vetiver leaves off. |

2 passes. Face lather. Good shave. Tabac is the first soap that I bought when I decided to start wetshaving in the late spring of 2021. At the time, I did not expect this to be a hobby, I was just buying a soap that looked like the shaving soaps of my youth. This was a shave test of a stainless Fili 13; the first stainless one that I have honed. I put a Jnat edge on this one and was completely underwhelmed. |
