Used to feel the same way, especially with the way it ends. But it really does work as a one off, self contained "thing". At this point I don't think a sequel could meet my expectations.

Thanks!
I heard many good things about that movie and it is already on my watch list.
So maybe this weekend would be a good time to finally watch it...

South African sci is really fucking good. There needs to be more money given to Neil bompkomf and that whole scene.

I was completely on the hype train for this film. I loved Alive in Joburg and thought this was going to be a cool expansion on the premise with more time and a bigger budget.

And it kind of was at first. But the longer it ran, the more it turned into another white savior action movie.

I saw it in theaters opening night with an old girlfriend, and we both came out at the end shrugging at each other and going, "That was okay... ish. I guess."

Hard disagree. We need to stop looking at good one-off movies and thinking "I'd love a sequel to that." What you really want is the director and production crew to stay together and see if they can bottle lightning twice in a row with a new idea/IP. The problem with the movie industry is that most people can't keep track of directors, so they tend to go to sequels, and they make a boatload of money with almost no innovation over the first.

Yeah I know it's hard for those of us who have been raised with mainstream movies, but it's good to have a story just end. We don't need sequels for every damn thing.

The important part of the deal is getting rid of the entire Fast and the Furious franchise

So exactly what happened with this movie and Blomkamp's disappointing follow-ups of Elysium and Chappie?

I believe that the salient point is "no more FatF", not "reboot this gawdamned classic", TBF. 😅

Hey, now. You leave Matt Damon outta this. He was in that award-winning historically-accurate epic about white guys saving The Great Wall of China! 😶

Do yourself a favor and follow mis-en-place before starting it. Have your snacks & beverage within reach, get your favorite pillows situated, turn off your ringer, preemptively distract the pets/kids/flatmates for the duration, etc. Then, let it envelop you in its tale, undisturbed and comfy. 🖖🏼

Elysium and Chappie were weird and not the greatest, but that doesn't mean I didn't prefer them to many other movies like Fast and Furious 15.

Had to look that one up...

Mise en place (French pronunciation: [mi zɑ̃ ˈplas]) is a French culinary phrase which means "putting into place". It refers to the setup required before cooking, and is often used in professional kitchens to refer to organizing and arranging the ingredients (e.g., cuts of meat, relishes, sauces, par-cooked items, spices, freshly chopped vegetables, and other components) that a cook will require for the menu items that are expected to be prepared during a shift.

Thanks for providing me with a new fancy french word I can now expression at every remotely fitting occasion! ;-)

Love to hear it! Happy to help ya be part of today's 10k, for sure!

Side note: if you're collecting media for the winter indoors, might I suggest The Expanse, followed by Scavengers Reign. 🤘🏼🤓

As a long-time xkcd-fan, I did not need to look that one up! :-)

The Expanse would have been a perfect típ if I hadn't already watched it and also read the complete book series. Twice... 😆

I am not so sure about "Scavengers Reign", as I generally have a hard time enjoying animated stuff.
But there have been exceptions in the past (really liked the Animatrix short films, and after first forcing myself to watch and get accustomed to it, also I am now a Lower Decks fan), so I will give it at least a try!

Awesome! No time like today to watch it all over again! 😋 I'm ~5x now, heh. So little hits all those marks, and it is such an incredibly rich setting, too.

Which is where, I feel, Scavengers Reign comes in: as a spiritual successor in what could easily be in-universe, and done with such exquisite skill, no less. Highly recommend, and I feel ya on the pickiness re: animated works. Its style alone could carry the series, but it's supported by a masterful story, a uniquely alien setting & mechanics, etc. Don't sleep on it. 🤘🏼

counterpoint: i want to see an alien invasion movie where everyone agrees by the end that we deserved it and the new management is doing a bang up job
