I always felt so bad for him in that scene. Worked so hard on the chili only to spill it across the ground. Really hits hard when he tries to scoop it back into the pot. I know it's all just a show, but damn it hit hard. |

The plague never went away. Globally there's 1-3 cases each year. Luckily it treated with common antibiotics. |

There's a lot more than 1-3 cases each year -- there's hundreds. I don't know where you got 1-3 from because even pneumonic plague specifically is far more common than that. |

It's a supercritical mass of plutonium. It's separated barely enough to avert catastrophe. It was brought together to take a photo demonstrating the plutonium facility's productivity. |

Far more than that. We average just over 4 per year in Colorado alone. https://cdphe.colorado.gov/colorado-plague-data 72 total human cases from 2005-2021 in Colorado, 11 of those fatal. That's 4.23 cases per year. There have also been 431 animal cases in Colorado over the same period. WHO reports ~600-750 cases of plague per year globally with 3% being pneumonic, 10% being septicemic, and the other 87% being bubonic. It's why there are warnings to not pick up ground squirrels and prairie dogs in Colorado, especially dead ones. Luckily, it's almost entirely bubonic plague, which is the most treatable form of plague. The one the Russians accidentally released is pneumonic plague, which is the most severe form. Incubation period can be as short as just a few hours, and the early signs are the same as pretty much a minor cold but it rapidly intensifies and can lead to death within as little as a day from initial contraction. If not caught and treated within a few hours, it's nearly 100% fatal. This one is a much, MUCH bigger deal. Pneumonic plague is terrifying. |

Pneumonic plague is the exact same bacteria, just infecting the lungs instead of lymph nodes. It's less common because the bacteria doesn't aerosolize very easily so it's not easy to get it into your lungs. It's also really not that big of a deal, because it's still not particularly contagious. It's not that uncommon either; there's been several outbreaks just in the past 20-30 years. It is of course a very serious disease but it's fairly easy to contain. |

Really? I though plutonium had to have a specific ignition process, at least for full fission. The first method I believe was to have explosives on five sides of it and detonate them all at the exact moment that imploded it somehow, I hear tell they do it different for the longest time now. What is critical mass with plutonium? I think Uranium is like around 3 kilos. |

The fact that she actually died from it is still a bit strange tbh. They must have known what she was working with and could have given her the proper antibiotic treatment right away. They probably have the antibiotics at her own facility exactly for contaminations like this, which she could have taken minutes after the exposure. But it still wasn’t enough… I don’t think we’re ever going to find out what happened. |

Just mass and geometry will do it. Critical mass for a sphere is about 10kg. This photo contains much more than 10kg tho. It doesn't need to be a sphere to go critical, it just needs the right geometry of the right mass. It won't be an atomic explosion like a bomb going off, but it will generate a burst of neutron radiation, gamma, and heat that will blow the geometry apart. The plutonium rods will be fine but anyone nearby will be as far from fine as it is possible to be |

Edit: This is true, and fun information, and everyone downvoting here is either a fucking sheep, or grinding an axe. End edit. One of the original prventatives for smallpox, the type of variolation that reached Europe from Asia and Africa, was to crush old blisters into a powder, and sniff up a line of it. Variolation is giving a small dose to allow the immune system time to get trained on it before it gets critical. |

We probably will never truly know and they are denying anything is even happening. There’s conflicting reports about what happened, and if it was even plague. One Russian report is that she contracted something in Thailand and then got sick when she was back in Russia. Another is that she accidentally broke a test tube with y. pestis cultures. If it’s the latter, I’d imagine she hid the accident for fear of punishment until it was too late, and now the Russian government is covering it up. |

Good to know Russian authorities treat this seriously and are cooperative. Remember Covid-19 and how information was very fuzzy for weeks when in broke out in late 2019? Probably not because it wasn't really reported on. Remember how China denies it came from the Wuhan lab and often even the city or China at all? Remember how that got completely out of control before it even left the country because authorities simply denied anything was going on? I'm sort of relieved to hear about this incident and how it's being handled so far. They already tested people in the victim's close proximity and are monitoring them closely but all they found so far were minor cases of guess what? Covid-19! Also kudos for researching that shit in Siberia instead of a major global port city like Wuhan. |
