R v Cope 2026 SCC 32 deserves a read. Bottom line is that Sentencing Circles are not after thoughts, and they require deliberate consideration. Our Criminal Justice system has to actively mitigate the racism and antagonism that is inherently built up in society. While the case involves domestic violence, the principles detailed here will have reaching affects.

The Supreme Court of Canada denies any tropes of parallel systems of rules for people of indigenous backgrounds, and emphasizes the focus for reconciliation. There are references to the Truth and Reconciliation Final Report, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Report, and an exploration into Parliament's intentions.
