Is there a drill bit made of the material of grinding wheel of orbital grinder, which breaks down slowly as it drills, or maybe it can be made of like diamond -studded metal file, so that the drill grinds as it drills, instead of cutting through the metal? Thank you for your interest. |

I know there are diamond bits for glass right? What are you working on? |

The do make diamond coated drill bits, the work well for ceramics. Make sure to let the bit do the work and not your strength. |

I mean, there are die grinders and bits? Is there like a specific use case you had in mind?

need it for metal or even wood, but drills through grinding instead of cutting |

those are to shave the border hard edge areas. Need something to drill through metal or even wood, or even concrete. |

Use a dull drill bit. |

I think explaining why you need it to grind rather than cut, will help find a suitable drill. |

Yeah im having trouble coming up with a use case for this in metal and wood |

cutting drill bit requires a slower revolving drill, so it doesn't roll on the surface, and also requires pressing harder. This can be slower and less efficient, than if the drill bit straightly grinds into the material. |

Yeah, I know. But they could conceivably do what you’re asking. |

There are tile drill bits that have diamond crusted ends, as well as concrete bits. What are you wanting to still through exactly |

Roll? As in moves before it bites into the material? Sounds like you need a center punch. As far as efficiency goes, I don't see how grinding off the material is more efficient than cutting it, which is what normal drill bits do. Or maybe slice? Shave? |

The closest you can get to a general purpose drill bit is a basic twist drill made for metal. That works equally well on softer materials like wood and plastic. Other than that, no. You typically choose the bit based on what you're drilling into. Also, not all twist drills are made equal. HSS-R (rolled) works for wood, plastic and soft metals like aluminium, copper or brass. HSS-G (ground) is the bit you probably should be using especially if you're drilling into steel. Then there's also HSS-Co or HSS-E (cobalt) which is for hard metals like stainless steel. Then there's also carbide bits but those are for drill presses and such. Diamond bits work the way you describe but they're for ceramics and glass. If you try using one on wood or plastic it'll just clog up immediately. There's a reason twist drills look like that: they're designed to lift the removed material from the hole so that the bit can drill. A bit similar to how an orbital sander works much better with a vacuum attached so the dust layer doesn't sit between the sanding disc and the surface you're sanding. Then again, for concrete you not only need a masonry bit but ideally one with an SDS+ attachment for a dedicated hammer drill. You could technically use a diamond or non-hammer masonry bit as well but it would be extremely slow and you'd probably overheat the bit which affects the heat treatment of it which then causes it to get dull and quit drilling and just start heating up even more. |

What you have here is called an XY Problem. You're attempting to solve X. If you define and describe the actual root problem Y, people will be able to better provide solutions. |

That's still a little vague. What are you actually trying to accomplish? What material, what size and orientation (perpendicular or angled) of hole, and what is the hole for? I'm looking for an answer like "I'm pre-drilling before toe-screwing 3/4" oak for the frame of a cabinet" or "I'm drilling out plug welds in 16 gauge sheet steel" For all we know, you're having an X/Y problem and the best advice might be to use a drill press or even some other tool entirely. |

I never went down this rabbit hole, but allegedly, "flint drills" existed since neolithic times and are simply a rotating stick (like a fire drill) with flint dust added for extra grit, as they are, allegedly, almost as hard as diamonds (and maybe extremely brittle? idk, but they sure seem like shitty diamonds) Can you get a stick into a drill and actually make a hole, like this? Maybe, but post the pictures. |

I think the reason you can't find any such drill, is because it's just less efficient than cutting the material, and possibly have a much worse lifespan due to clogging of the drill and overheating. Grinding things will clog up the drill if the dust can't be pushed out of the hole. You're going to have a very hard time pushing the material/dust away with an abrasive tip, due to the nature of abrasives. |

But why wont a normal cutting bit work? Drilling holes is a solved problem |

maybe the grinding drill bit can be shaped into a spiral, so that as it grinds, the left-behind material gets pushed out of the drill hole. |

So you want a normal spiral drill. It does exactly that, it just cuts small flakes away as opposed to grinding them, but the difference is moot and the results the same. |

think of the person you stole from, and ask for forgiveness in the mind, even if you stole something at nine years old. This will clear your head of running thoughts, clear your mind of mental fog, and help you sleep better at night, so you can make better decision, judgments, and life choices. Otherwise, you will just delete others and yourself using Alzheimer’s disease. Use “there is a right way to do anything”, to keep yourself in the clear-minded state. Do this, even if you stole something at nine years old, stole something one time, stolen a small piece of Lego toy, or stolen from a family member or relative (in which case, you might need to personally apologize to the relative). |

Is that why you need to grind rather than cut? Not sure what this has to do with drills. |
