My theory is something something consumerist culture.

But I am not really sure of how and why.

Not everyone. Live like every day is your birthday.

Today is the first day of the end of your life.

Hmm, I am getting old every quant of time, not only once per year. So why not?

because celebrations are fun and bring people together. that time's going to pass anyway, we might as well celebrate the achievement of a loved one having survived another year. 🙌

People might as well celebrate for no reason instead?

true, but then it's just called a party, if there's no particular thing to celebrate and no theme.

milestones like birthdays, passing exams, getting a driving licence, moving to a new home, etc etc are easier themes to work with.

those sorts of celebrations aren't for everyone, but some people really enjoy them!

they have even less time to live after 1 year
