I think the bigger issue than the route is that countries reselling will hold back supply when push comes to shove. Turkey or India aren't going to send diesel to Europe when their own economies need it. |

It's kind of the goal in this case. Balancing between making gas exports for Russia harder and less rewarding, while maintaining some import to EU somehow so EU citizens don't freeze and economy keeps producing. It's more a political geopolitical game than a capitalist one in this case. |

individuals who come to the conversation dehumanizing others will and imo should face pushback on their bullshit. bigotry done jokingly is still bigotry. i find it cowardly to reply to valid pushback with "i was just joking you guys". you are free to do what you want though, but that will only make you hang around more at the nazi bar (i'm talking about your instance of choice, if it wasn't clear) and the reactionary echo chamber inherent in such places. i guess if .ml users being insufferable to you is a common occurence, the problem could be you and your claims, such as this. i'd also suggest trying to learn some humility and maybe engage in some self-criticism while your at it. good luck with your deprogramming! |

That your argument that you need gas power in the energy mix is invalid. That bit we have is only a historical remnant being phased out. Edit: ok, not entirely invalid: current situation is that a lot of countries rely significantly on gas power. I think i get your point. |

Which isn't a bad thing imo in the long-term. Fossil fuel should be expensive. It helps people make better decisions, maybe they'll get an e-bike or e-car, install the balcony solar panels after all, insulate their house a bit better instead of traveling 4x per year etc etc |

Sure, fossil fuels need to be phased out, but that's going to be a decades long process. The only country that's trying to do that at scale right now is China, and even after rolling out renewables on an absolutely mindbogglingly scale, they still rely on fossil fuels for roughly half their energy. Europe hasn't even started taking any meaningful action in this direction. |

this is not at all what the european leadership cares about, they'd be happy to exploit the world until you need to buy air cans in order to breathe. furthermore you cannot do policies like that, you have people who need to eat, heat, and produce. this only hurts working class europeans, this will cause a crisis and depression. let's not masquerade a clear act of finance capital as some sort of progressive win. don't get me wrong, i won't shed a tear for you people suffering, it's time you get a taste of it after so many centuries of all the barbarism you people committed. you are the scum of the earth, and the pariah for all that is good. but in all of this it will not be the ones that actually have to pay the price for their sins that suffer. |

That's how sanctions generally work, is mostly impossible to cut off trade entirely, but it imposes costs of around 20% or more, which does impact the balance sheets of the sanctioned country and improves competitiveness of other sources |

Except the two biggest exporters of electricity, not to mention Norway and Denmark (Finland?) Being well over 90% electric in their respective new sales car fleets, Spain going all out on solar, several off shore power plants and a number of long term batteries (non-electric). Oh and the number of hydrogen installations throughout germany. Except all those steps? I agree, more needs to be done and fast! |

it's not necessary and counter productive to this goal since this type of green tech is already affordable and scalable to degree that it can mitigate climate change. this exact same form of sanctioning is keeping this green tech out of our hands to protect oil and auto profiits and maintain a genocidal global hegemony at the expensive of climate change. |

While that's all true, these developments are happening within a broader energy system that remains structurally dependent on fossil fuels and none of them change that underlying dynamics in a meaningful way. For example, EV sales in Nordic countries represent just one segment of transport, but do nothing to address the freight, aviation, shipping, and industrial heat sectors where oil and gas remain entrenched. Spain's solar buildout is genuinely impressive, yet Spain also heavily relies on the European grid which runs on natural gas for balancing and heating. Offshore wind and long duration batteries are necessary, but their deployment pace is far below what would be required to retire gas peakers and baseload fossil plants across Europe. Meanwhile, hydrogen installations in Germany are mostly small pilot projects that consume electricity rather than displace oil and gas at any useful volume. All these efforts, however laudable, operate within a system whose economics, infrastructure, and political incentives still favor fossil fuels. These kinds of isolated successes will not move the needle on the overall fossil fuel dependence. |

It's pretty clear that the cost imposed on Europe is far higher than the cost imposed on Russia. The reality of the situation is that there is a constant demand for Russian exports, and it's not hard to find buyers. Meanwhile, Europe cut itself off from its main supplier, and then the US cut Europe off from Gulf oil. So, Europe is now paying for energy through the nose, and it sits downstream from the intermediaries. When push comes to shove, countries will save oil and gas for their own use leaving Europeans out in the cold. |

The US geopolitical strategy of trying to sanction Russia while starting a trade war with China and saber-rattling over Taiwan and then being shocked when China doesn't participate in the sanctions is genuinely bizarre. It really leads me to believe that the powers that be just have absolutely no idea what they're doing. I mean, I guess if you want to understand the mentality, you can just talk to the average lib, they'd absolutely do the same because they aren't capable of thinking beyond, "country bad." And saying it might be a bad strategy to push rivals towards each other by giving them a common enemy is surely enough to brand me a "tankie" and dismiss everything I say. When I put it that way, it's not really surprising that the people in the halls of power are on the same brainrot. |

EU has since long introduced for example the emissions rights: CO2 emissions have a price. EU has steered towards electrification of cars, buses and trucks. EU has implemented policies to decrease trash production etc etc Keeping Fossil fuel very cheap with subsidies is exactly what will cause economic crisis and suffering. Steering away from fossils does the opposite. I am well aware EU (and mainly many memberstates) also support fossil fuels in various ways, but it is in no way as black and white as you paint the picture. No, it's not the goal of the EU-policy towards Russian fossils to make fossils more expensive, just a side effect, but it's not a bad one. And I don't think it's "the capitalists" deciding those policies, they'd probably rather have just continued the trade from before 2022. The fossils lobby is powerful but there are more players and influences at play. Things are very very rarely as simple and black/white as some people try to tell you. The harsh truth is that no one is truly in control, there are many things that happen and not everything happens for a reason or because someone powerful decided it. The world is organised chaos. |
