Linux boots on the iPhone 11, and we believe weโ€™re the first in the world to do it.

That's a lot of work for little success except the "i wanna do this, no matter what"-factor.

Light years away from anything remotely useful, and even if, I had to buy a crapple-device for it ๐Ÿ˜

Not to downplay the achievement, it's awesome.

This is really cool, and perhaps a big stepping stone into Linux development on Apple hardware, the problem with phones is that without manufacturer support the development is so slow the hardware will be EOL before the software matures enough to use.

On top of that, I assume Apple will go well out of their way to plug whatever hole allowed this boot to happen on new generations.

That's probably not really a concern, since I'm guessing the main thing that enables this is jailbreak, which is an ongoing cat & m game since the iphone 3g's era.

I wish it would be a stepping stone. But be realistic. It's a fun project, a great proof it's kinda possible, but that's all we ever will hear about it.
The moment every driver for every lil shit in this device would be remade or disassembled, noone would use this stoneage-device anymore. Or could even get one to begin with.

And as you said, should this ever be more of a proof-of-concept, apple will fix any hole and everything dies.

This might be a jumpoff point to get Linux booting on the A18 and other apple mobile chips as well, no? On devices like the Macbook Neo or some iPads, having Linux as an option makes sense in my opinion.

It won't. I'll repeat what i wrote in another comment:

Not that I wouldn't like that, that's not the point. It's just WAY more than just "boot linux".
I mean, come back to this thread in a year and see what happened.

Jailbreak is basically dead on new iphones though. The old days of jailbreaking being viable are long past.

there's no bootrom exploit discovered yet on those newer devices. this uses usbliter8 that was discovered for iphone xs/11, kinda similar to checkm8 for iphone 4s~x

the reason asahi linux is possible is because apple allows loading arbitrary kernel images on macs. they don't for ios devices.
