Is this for wood handling (ie avoiding splinters and sharp edges)? Or for use with rotating machinery? I don't think the latter is advisable.

Generally, there shouldn't be blood involved with woodworking. Either you're moving too fast, your tools are dull, or something else is going wrong. Only times I busted a knuckle was when I was rushing and didn't do things properly.

This is especially important if you're working with power tools. A table saw or router injury will leave a big blood stain, so best to correct the issue before that happens.

My old man always told me a job's not done till you've bled on it.

If you don’t want to use your own blood to stain the wood, you can use Dragon's Blood!

Don't use gloves or lose clothing when operating spinning machines of all kind e.g. table saws. A splinter seems like a nice option, when your full hand gets sucked into the blade.

If you don't believe it

I find I end up drawing blood with my handsaw more than any single other tool. Band-aid-class injuries, not serious ones. I'm a lot more attentive when using something electrical.
