Hopefully these will be better than their ICE options. I never understood why someone would want such a tiny car when all you got was 35mpg. Didn't seem worth it. Geo Metro far older got 50mpg.

edit: To those who have EU or other experiences:

the Smart lineup averages roughly 35 mpg combined in this year's EPA ratings.

Feel free to find your own sources. 33mph city, 35mpg combined. Your milage may vary (tee hee hee, but really)

The original car was garbage. It had a horrible lurching transmission, used dirty diesel, was cheaply built, despite the price and they broke constantly.
But you bought one because they were easy to park in European cities.

The original Smart ForTwo used 3.3l/100km or 71 mpg. The gas ones got 46 mpg. None of them got 35mpg.

Googling shows 31-34mph in the city.

I seem to recall there being some difference between the estimated mpg between US and EU, so while I trust you're right, I do know that I am right. :)

I had one of the diesel versions, my best full tank was 82mpg. My Vespa could not even get that mileage.

You bought those because of the size. They're really practical for use in a dense city that had their street layout grow around pedestrians, horses and ox-drawn carts.

The current Smart model range has nothing to do with its original idea. I just saw one, it was substantially larger than a Mini. With the #2 they finally get back to their origins, but in a much more convincing electric system. The battery sounds pretty respectable for a car that size and also at that price point.

When you say "larger than a Mini", do you mean the current Mini or the original? Because the current Mini is also substantially larger than the original.

I had a colleague who would drive his 2001 Smart Fortwo to Croatia from Germany every summer. He had an average fuel consumption of 2,5 L/100 km for the whole trip. Must've been hell on the roads down to the Balkans though lol

The smart suffered from some aerodynamic penalties for being so tall and its short length.

But the smart could also handle crashes muuuuuuch better than the Geos and part of the reason we have had gas mileage losses since the early 90s were that crash structures and air bags have had to keep pace to protect against the oversized SUV threats we face on roads now.

We really should be setting road taxes based on vehicle weight with much higher penalties on heavy cars and trucks. That would incentivize smaller vehicles and we’d all get safer and more efficient at the same time.
