I don't think super Saiyan was a thing in dragon ball. I'm pretty sure it didn't happen until dragon ball Z on Namek when fighting Frieza?

Fair. I guess it took it too literally. I'm not sure what people use to refer to the whole universe that they take place in. I'll look it up!

The entire manga is just Dragon Ball. Z was added for the anime at the beginning of the Saiyan saga.
