Some things are better off staying buried. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a presidential decree on May 26 bestowing the honourary title of “Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army”, or UPA, on an elite unit of the nation’s special forces.

As the armed wing of the far-right Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), the UPA carved out a gruesome name for itself in the shifting borderlands between Poland and Ukraine during World War II.

It remains infamous in Poland for its role in the massacres of ethnic Poles and Jews in Volhynia and eastern Galicia – massacres that Polish historians believe killed tens of thousands civilians, and that the Polish state considers part of a deliberate campaign of genocide.

Zelensky’s decree was all the more striking for having the uneasy makings of a pattern. The day before, the Jewish president had presided over the reburial of the repatriated remains of Andriy Melnyk in the national military ceremony near Kyiv.

Melnyk, who died in Germany in 1964 and had been buried in Luxembourg, was the leader of a branch of the OUN – and a staunch advocate for collaboration between the Ukrainian nationalist movement and Nazi Germany and its fascist allies.

Tankies are correct when they see the Monroe doctrine and how it has been used in the Americas, yet they cannot see how Russian policy toward its neighbors mirrors it.

Because they don't arrive at the correct conclusion through sound argumentation. They are anti-America, which often will lead you to the correct conclusion, but it will fail you as soon as America isn't the big bad.

It's a worldview where truth isn't real. Claims are not evaluated, because that's not what claims are for. They're just how you perform loyalty to the ingroup, which is the only thing that has ever mattered to people stuck in the tribalist mindset.

They wouldn't know if you asked them, or rather, they would just tell you another lie. The truth is that there is very little to no ethnic difference between Ukrainians and Russians. The differences are cultural.

Most other heads of state aren't openly celebrating Nazi collaborators. It shouldn't be hard to just not do that, particularly if you're relying on foreign support to fight a war and crucially to counteract a narrative of your state being a Nazi state. Burying our heads in the sand over it hoping that it will go away is just a bad idea.

Only for people of Ukraine to get pissed with Nationalist Wings using that as reason to have them elected instead of "A president who spurns our National Heroes."

Tankies are conservatives pretending to be normal people. Only conservatives think the opposite of "conservative" is "liberal". If you point out that "progressive" is opposite of conservative in a tankie space, you could be banned. This is because tankies are conservatives.

Conservatives are instinctively violent and hostile and ban for the slightest disagreements, especially when they are proven wrong.

Most other countries weren't invaded, attacked or oppressed by the Soviet Union to view the enemy of their enemy as their friend. If you look at the countries that were though, like Lithuania and Finland, they absolutely celebrate Nazi collaborators.

I was not surprised there were Ukrainians desperate enough to collaborate with the nazis. However how badly Ukrainians were treated up until WWII by Stalinist USSR, some where probably desperate enough to view nazis as allies when they werent. Bandera and Melnyk were imprisoned for some time in concentration camps (and later moved to other forms of imprisonment) by the nazis from 1941, mainly for the OUN wanting an independent Ukraine.

Nowadays, for many Ukrainians both the nazis and Soviets were oppressors. And many celebrate people who supported independence and dont equate them to nazis because of the fact that they were stabbed in the back. Looking at the facts, by typical tankie logic that is applied to Melnyk and Bandera, the Soviet Union should also be counted as a nazi collaborator (due to Ribbentrop-Molotov pact). But tankies have double standards and make excuses.

But due to Melnyk's antisemitism and helping with the murder of Jews, it is beyond me why Zelenskiy, a Jew, decided to attend that reburial.

I wouldn't use it as evidence for a nazi government in Ukraine though. A lot of Ukrainians have strange positions due to constantly being victimized by an imperialist Soviet Union and an imperialist Russia.

There are probably better figures to honor that neither support the nazis nor the Soviets.
