Sony is getting free advertisements. Of course if those games are not complete shit and were praised only because of lack of anything better at that platform.

It's a more subtle but powerful difference, which is recompiling creates native code, which is more expansible and efficient (usually).

Emulation can appear similar but the code remains unchanged, so the system itself has to be emulated to run the non-native code, which (unless the emulator is very efficient) will usually be more limited and slower.

This is huge indeed. Wondering if once it's decompiled they can add functionality on top of it like native mouse support, ultra wide aspect ratios or HDR injection.

This is like saying Sony is losing exclusives to PC because PS emulators exist lol.

Emulation is nice if you go for an authentic experience. This is better: It allows a lot more easier modding, especially for older titles which then get widescreen support and improved graphics.

What I'm hearing through the grapevine is that these quick and dirty executables are not conducive to any of those benefits, because it's hardly different from just emulating it in the first place.

Aspect ratios are one of the first things that happen normally; this one has already been updated for ultrawide(beta) and 4K with up to 240 FPS. It has also received Keyboard support, background shader compilation, and FSR is currently being worked on. The current source even provides Discord Rich Presence.

But emulating does not give you Ultrawide(in beta) or 4K @ 240FPS, FSR (currently still disabled in source, coming soon), Discord Rich Presence and Background Shader Compilation.

With that logic, Nintendo doesn't have any exclusives too. Maybe besides Switch 2, but that console losing exclusives too.

It's hardly different from an end user perspective (except emulators often have extra features the direct games don't), but it is a very different way to get things running.

I think the replies about "Emulation is not a port" misses your point. That's why you put it in quotes as 'ported'.

But besides that, some official "ports" from game companies are also just emulation. They do not port the game code, but they port the game over this way, in the sense of making it playable.

What I've seen are posts like these floating around. I haven't done much emulation lately, but aspect ratio and frame rate adjustments don't sound new to me, nor do background shader compilations. It also sounds like the functionality can often be unreliable and difficult for a human to get in there and fix, unlike a "proper" decompilation that we've seen so much of out of the N64 scene.

Ultrawide is a different thing - you have to adjust camera parameters to make it work good. Frame Rate adjustments also depend on the Game Engine - there are probably still a lot of games out there that link physics with frame rate (especially on consoles), so just ramping up FPS will break your game. This can be avoided if you have code you can actually modify.

I am sure that manual de/recompilations are easier to modify, but it's also more work - not a bit more work, but years of work in many cases.

If it's doing what you need it to do, knock yourself out. But my expectations from those more familiar with this scene are to not expect to get every benefit you normally would just because a PS3 game has been packaged up as an .exe. In many cases, it may be limited by the emulator it's been created out of.

That I can confirm firsthand. Recompiled code is just prebaked CPU instructions in another language that can be compiled. That's all there is to it.

So for modding, it's only slightly easier technically as you have the option to inject code easier than on the emulated platform and providing facilities for the host OS to load them (dynamic libraries, which is a big benefit which most of the slop coders don't fully understand how or why it is).

For proper modding research, a decompilation (of the portions of the game you want to mod very extensively) is needed.

For a simple aspect ratio and UI fix patch (and other simple improvements) - that is achievable on the original code itself via cheats/code injection (anything that has an FPU should work, PS1 and older are harder generally). You generally do not need a whole recompilation/decompilation for this kind of a thing.

Sometimes even the original hardware without any performance boost can handle it, but most of the times this is where emulator's overclocking and memory extension features come into play to help.

Honestly, in my opinion, machine code hacking is not that hard. It takes way less time and energy to do it than this to achieve the same "improvements" with way lower barriers to entry.

Little offtopic incoming:

“when everyone’s special; no one will be.”

I never agreed with this statement. If everyone is special, then everyone is. In example in game Overwatch everyone has special abilities and are nothing alike anyone else. Everyone is a specialist in their own field. Everyone is special.

I get where you're coming from, but imo I feel like the quote applies to video games and their publishers a good bit. At least nowadays.

Everyone wants to be The Next Big Thing, everyone wants their game to be the only one people are playing.

Yeah, this is really annoying and tiring. Especially multiplayer live service games are designed in a way that you have no time to play anything else.

As said, I don't care where the quote comes from and what reasons they present in 2 hour movie. I apply the logic of the quote to the discussion we have here, and decided to not agree. It is my personal opinion independent from the film. BTW I watched the film too.

But if you don't care about the context that it comes from, you may as well say you don't agree with "Greed is good" from Wall Street either.

The context does not matter for our discussion. I evaluate the quote by itself, not as a quote, but as a standalone statement. There is nothing wrong with that approach. Why? Because the quote is used in context of OUR discussion, not in context of the film. It is applied as reasoning to our topic that has nothing to do with the film or its origin. And I disagree with that reasoning.

I don't know how to explain it else. Edit: Simply, I don't care what the comic character has a reason for to say that. It has 0 impact on what I believe is right or wrong.

You know, I always assumed that we'd get a PS4 emulator eventually, thanks to the console running on a PC architecture. I just never thought to consider that we don't actually need a PS4 emulator, because we can just make the games run natively on PC instead, thanks to the console running on a PC architecture.

I mean he said "super" not special, he was trying to sell superpowers to level the playing field and reduce the general public's perception of super heroes.

Hold on tight to those beta tapes, memory sticks and minidiscs, Sony. Maybe they should have some kind of corporate history training for their leadership about fantasy formats that only exist for one company, but what do us silly consumers know? It's sure obvious to everyone how hard Valve is losing by getting their platform (along with everyone's largest game library) to run on anything with a GPU.

This isn't necessarily true. A good villain is often written to make a good point that is to some degree or another true. Its just that they go try to achieve their noble goal in the worst way possible.

Ganondorf in The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker is a pretty good example. Even though I didn't like a lot about that game, the writing of his character was great. He wanted to see the peaceful wind Hyrule had, for in his own land "the wind always brought death." Which itself is a pretty noble cause. The problem is his way of achieving it: taking it away from Hyrule.

Another one that could be argued is Joaquin Phoenix's Joker: his desire is better social support for people that are socially marginalized (well, one of them at least), a point I genuinely agree with, socially awkward people should have access to better social support. However, he tries to achieve it in literally the worst possible way, and I don't agree with the way the character goes about it.

It makes the villain more believable. No person does something evil just for the sake of being evil. Well, maybe some do, but most don't. They usually believe what they are doing is a noble cause, and it usually is (like, providing better for my family says the thief, or ridding the world of bad people says the assassin, etc). They just use awful ways to do it, instead of better, less deadly and injurious ways.

Obviously there are exceptions, but that's doesn't mean all villains are evil just for the love of the game.
