Max Miller approves: a 3,770yo Babylonian clay tablet written in Akkadian, containing the oldest known cooking recipes. The tablet includes 25 recipes for meat and veggie stews. (recipes inside!)

Modern food blogs wish they had this level of longevity. No popups, no ads, just stew!

A Babylonian stew prepared by Tasting History if anyone wants to try out an updated recipe:
https://www.tastinghistory.com/recipes/babylonianlambstew

and a Babylonian tuh'u specifically made for the New Year celebrations:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IYYhoO-hiY

And just yesterday Max posted a video about assyrian pomegranate beer
https://youtu.be/MO0lKDNKxmE?si=SaZ6ZLLlOmNBvaEO

Table of the Gods is a similar channel specifically about recipes of ancient Mesopotamia. Very neat stuff, some of which I believe comes from this very tablet.

All this content proudly and shamelessly lifted from the evil empire. 🙂

I need to see if he did an episode on the nutritional value of medieval bread. The health benefits compared to white bread sound pretty amazing...

As a feral Iberian still struggling with preparing acorns I might have to look into this new 'recipe' thing. Hope it's not just microwave recipes, which wasn't invented here yet. (Note to self: cooking acorns in milk makes milk coagulate?)

As a feral Iberian

Huh! So you're on the Spanish / Portu Iberian peninsula, living a feral life? 😮

I remember reading about acorns in My Side of the Mountain, about a pre-teen boy who runs away and lives in the mountains for a season. IIRC acorns are really acidic, and need to be soaked, or something to get the tannins out in order to be edible. Those same tannins were evidently really handy for making leather, though.

In Medieval Europe, I believe there were also some leather preparation steps that involved urine and something else that smelled pretty darn foul. Gotta love the end-result, tho!

Ah, acorns... XD

Well, white bread is pretty much just sugar and processed wheat (which is basically also sugar), so the bar is pretty low.

You got that right. Similar with white rice & pasta.

It's definitely the worst, but a lot of white bread elsewhere too will be like that. Perhaps with less processing and preservatives, perhaps with less added sugar. But it's still mostly just sugar and carbs fast enough that they may as well be sugar.

I see 1 lamb recipe, and a handful of youtube links, presumably each with a single recipe. I'm not in a position to watch youtube videos atm, and I don't want to make a recipe by following a video

Three soaks and cooking in milk haven't brought good results. Not acidic, but adstringent. Acorn coffee isn't bad. It was too tempting to experiment with them as they sit right on my driveway and the equines would get too fat if they ate them. I'm not feral enough for them yet.
Leather unfortunately needs a lot of moving about besides the soaking in tannines, as far as I know.

FWIW, pasta is generally shite in the US, though I was blown away by the fresh pasta in Italy —hell, even the basic, commercial kind. Super cheap, too. 🤤

Oh, for ding-donged, bloody-well sure!

My cousin's family moved to Italy many years ago. I only visited them once or twice over the years, but the food (not just pasta, pizza, bread, but everything else) was just mind-blowing. Except for the calamari, partly because I love molluscs & sea-creatures like that, my little friends. But, long story.

One time my cuz was visiting, and she offered to cook, and evidently the 'rents (parents) decided on "pasta," a major conceptual break in their minds, but oh well, lol. Anyway, it was fascinating... she made this little hill of wheat flour before our eyes, mixed it with some water, let it gel a couple moments, the sliced it up and hung the 'noodles' up to dry on a little drying-rack, or whatever it was. Then boiled them a bit, and Robert was your avuncular figure!

(I had no bloody idea it could go that swiftly!)

Yeah, same! (mostly) I've only visited a few places in Italy during my travels over the years, (Rome, Firenze, Bologna, Bari) and each were just as revelatory as the others. Also, my deep and abiding love for cephalopodes put me off a number of menu items (😢), so I feel ya there.

It's eye-opening how insanely better food can be without corn syrup, etc. 🫪

Don't mind me, just here to updoot My Side of the Mountain. I remember reading that, and at least one of its sequels, way back in grade school. I wonder if it's due for a comeback. Seems like it would fit into "cozy lit" quite well, with its low stakes and ridiculously competent protagonist.

Haha, I'm a late-middle-aged bloke FWIW, and that book absolutely fascinated me. Just... the possibilities, you know? Ah... I love how this guy "John Plant" (i.e. Primitive Technology) teaches us how to make all kinds of useful stuff out... almost nothing, really!

Because a member of the LGBT community accepting an invitation by fascists and their enablers to go to a tournament that many loudly and vocally protested for many reasons, who then goes on to post about how great of a time they're having, is worthy of bringing up in more than just a comment reply to another account.

Ah, thank you for that.

I'm surprised I don't see you posting in WAY more threads about people we should also avoid, then, as it seems like a relatively common offense.

I'm not dismissing your concerns out of hand, mind. I've had to decide many times who I wish to throw out (JK Rowling) and who I really really don't want to throw out but have at least minimized my support (Neil Gaiman). It's a hard call, and standing up for what you feel strongly about - especially when it's at least a pretty good cause - is something I can respect, even if my instinct on THIS one is to go "really? eh, who cares".

For me personally, it can take me some times to let ideas percolate in my head. My initial reaction is not to immediately unsub from Tasting History. But I'll ponder on it, thanks to you.

I guess I'm saying all this becasue I expected the reply to be something stupid I could just ignore and then berate you for spamming the thread. But I certainly can't say that, whether or not I end up agreeing with you.

So thank you for the answer. I do appreciate it. And I will honestly consider it.

Love Tasting History! I appreciate that he actually tries the food.

I've made Tuh'u before (second link), and it's rich. Easy to see how ancient people would have been all about it.

Ancient and especially people from when spices were a flex, had such strange tastes.

Edit: I've made many ancient or just super old recipes, many from Max's show. The Enlightenment era added cloves and allspice to everything. Ancient Roman flavors were not normal for now, but were fairly good.
