This is only six years after Encounter at Farpoint, it's conceivable McCoy is also still alive.

Spock is definitely still alive, McCoy is possibly still alive, unbeknownst to him Kirk will come back in 2 years but die an hour later.

If McCoy is still alive there is a chance Chekov might still be alive too since he's much younger.

Imagine his surprise when Kirk tracks him down to ask him to help fight the Borg.

Spock wouldn't find it logical to care that Mr. Scott is alive. Mr. Scott wants someone fun who doesn't mind a drink and laugh.

The only thing they have to bond over is technical and logic based system.

IIRC, Scotty tries to rescue Kirk from the Nexus first, and unintentionally re-writes the events of Generations and hence First Contact (Engines of Destiny). The Shatnerverse novels take place after that.

I think it's stated elsewhere (at least in the novels) that Uhura is alive too (or at least was up to the start of TNG).

@The_Picard_Maneuver Wasn't McCoy canonically alive at that point too?
