Within three to four days, a red, raised and itchy spot develops at the vaccination site. This is a sign of “a take,” which means the vaccine is doing its job. This spot soon turns into a pus-filled blister that gradually gets a little bigger by day 10. Then, it slowly starts to dry out. As the blister heals, a scab develops. This is a normal part of your skin’s healing process. By 14 to 21 days after vaccination, the scab falls off. In its place, a small, pitted scar remains.

It was a live vaccine unlike other injections which use dead cells. Part of the reason it made a blister. They carried some risks you don't have with other vaccines.

Newer smallpox vaccines given to the military no longer cause scars and are much safer. They can be given to immuno compromised individuals.

Polio vaccination was either given orally or later, and is still today, given as an usual injection.
Today, smallpox vaccination isn't necessary mandatory for everyone anymore, as the virus is officially exterminated.

smallpox

TB doesnt cause the scar like that. the tuberculin test causes a swelling, to determine if you have been infected with TB, or if you are a foreigner who had BCG vaccine.

I was reading that article and thinking, wait, isn’t this just the futuristic medicine shown in Star Trek that cures all illnesses? Then at the bottom:

The term "hypospray", although better known from its usage in the 1960s television show Star Trek, is attested in the medical literature as early as 1956.

No. BCG scar, which was developed as a TB vaccine. It is only efficacious in some forms of infant TB, though.

Smallpox innoculation scars are smaller, among other things.

100 million doses of BCG given a year to infants to prevent against an infant form of TB, so most people in the world have them.

For old USians it's smallpox, for younger people of other countries it's BCG. I was zapped for smallpox in 1964.

I wouldn't say they are smaller, but they look different. I'm not an expert, but I'd say the two upper scars are from the two mandatory smallpox vaccinations and the lower from the (likely also mandatory) bcg injection.

My mother has this scar. I just asked as a kid and was told what it was (although I've forgotten which exact vaccine now) and asked why I didn't and she says because all the vaccines now don't leave scars. Which not accurate overall was accurate for me.

She also got a vaccine on a sugar cube she laughed when I said that sounded easier to give to children over needles.

The one with the cut is smallpox, the one on sugarcubes is polio. Both were terrible scourges before vaccines were invented.

My dad has one on his arm and my mom has one on her butt. My dad says his sister's is on her butt too, and that they did boys on the arm and girls on the butt. He didn't know why, and I don't either, or even if that was widely practiced, but my parents didn't grow up in the same state/area, so it tracks a little, since my aunt and mom both have it. My dad's youngest brother is 15 years younger than him, and didn't get the shot. Kinda related- I had chicken pox that I got from a pox party, and then I gave a bunch of kids chicken pox at my own pox party. My cousin is less than 4 years younger than me and got the chicken pox vaccine and never had chicken pox.

I still have the scar from it and I got mine in 2008 or so. Mine was not the injectable version, which is safer for immunocompromised. Mine was the mini fork they stabbed you with a few times to perforate the skin area. It itched so much.

I remember my dad telling me about that when he joined the army. He said they had to line up like cattle and go down a line, and they were multiple guys with those injector guns on both sides of you and you'd get hit in both arms as you went.

It was given in the hospital after birth, so maybe it did not leave that visible scars for everyone?

🤔 Yeah, there's also the concerns about making following comments not make sense or appearing to have hidden evidence that I was ever wrong. But a strikethrough can avoid those issues.
