Might not be cats though, I think it could also have been bears. |

Freyja is so cool. The Eddas feel over 1000 years ahead of their time and have her skillfully rebuffing slut-shaming and having her many "unladylike" traits not detracting from, but embodying all the deistic domains she represents. The Christianization of Europe and the Americas really set humanity back. |

Ancient times were more practical times. Women had to participate in defence of hearth and home, especially when the menfolk were out attacking the hearth and home of others. And naturally when you have women fighting, you have mythology of women fighting. The Norse had Freyja, probably the single best European deity in my book. (Some Finnish ones might give her a good run for her money, mind.) And China had 九天玄女 (The Mysterious Lady of the Nine Heavens). Who is a goddess of war (specifically strategy), sex, and longevity. Oh, and creation and exorcism as well. Because there have been a lot of Kick-Ass Women of History, there's also a lot of Kick-Ass Women of Mythology if you dig deep enough. (Why do you have to dig? In a word: erasure.) |

The Prose Edda very specifically uses "köttum" (cats) while both also use the term "fressa" ("growlers" which apply both to bears and wild cats) so I think the inference can be safely made that it's cats. |
