I have an interest in linguistics and in American dialects in particular, so I was wondering whether the women from the clips below sound to you like born and bred Americans, or whether you would think that at least some of them are foreign-born:

Define "born and bred", what the hell does that mean. The closest definition would be Native Americans I feel, who have lived on those lands for ages, but there's so many different tribes and accents. My intuition is telling me this isn't your definition of a "born and bred" American.

3 sounds like it was someone in the UK who wrote the text it was saying.

Really?

Really?

There's a lot of less obtuse and more honest ways to make your point than pretending to not undertake the phrase born and bred.

Really? Really? There's a lot of less obtuse and more honest ways to make your point than pretending to not undertake the phrase born and bred.

Born: anybody who was born in the land that is now the United States of America. This can include the Native Americans, descendents of European migrants, and descendents of non-European migrants. That's a whole slew of different accents and cultures.

Bred: anybody who was raised in the United States of America since birth. Again, this can include Native Americans, (second generation or more) descendents of European migrants, and (second generation or more) descendents of non-European migrants.

Something is telling me that's not what you define as "born and bred" American. Even if you are a big racist who believes only white people can be "born and bred Americans", there are lots of different accents among white people (a Texan, New Yorker, and Californian have vastly different accents, not to mention those descended from Scottish, Irish, French, Italian, Greek, etc. migrants)

There is objectively no definition of "born and bred" Americans that does not include Native Americans, since they were the first to be born and raised there, and broader definitions are unhelpful in that it lumps in lots of different groups. The racist definition, again, isn't helpful due to the wide variety of accents among the descendents of the European migrants.

So "anyone that was born and raised in the United States" is "racist" because it covers different races and instead you want to differentiate between the different races? Hmmm

I did not say that, don't put words in my mouth. I said, in the context of the question where he wants to find voices that sound like "born and bred Americans", it isn't a helpful descriptor due to the wide range of accents across all those who were born and raised in the United States.

I did not accuse anybody of being racist, I mentioned that even if one was racist, the question still doesn't make much sense due to the variety of accents among descendants of European migrants.

I do not support the segregation of races, I myself am from a migrant family. I am equally Australian as those from other backgrounds.

I reiterated my point that Native Americans, under any definition, falls under "born and bred Americans", as OP believed that it was not honest, i.e. a lie

All who were born and raised in the United States are equally American, they eat the same food and participate in the same festivals.

As it turns out, calling somebody an asshole is not a very good way to explain your points. If your position is correct, then you should back it up with relevant statements.

I don't agree that an implication of the question is that there is only one way "born and bred" Americans sound.

It's fully possible to ask if an accent sounds like it plausibly belongs to someone born and raised in the US while acknowledging that there are many different ways people who fit that description can sound .

Fair enough, this is just my interpretation. I just really don't like how they phrased it, where they want voices that do not sound "foreign-born". I've heard the same sort of stuff directed at my family in the past for our "foreign" accents, despite my parents having proper Australian citizenship and everything.

And based on how their response is just "asshole" and "obtuse", it doesn't seem like they're the open-minded type. They have also claimed that Native Americans being "born and bred Americans" is not honest (which isn't a good look)
