Love:
Before I talk about the frustrations, please note that I want to use my Steam Machine not just for gaming, but as a PC replacement for productivity. I prefer Fedora Workstation (not immutable) with GNOME for my workflow. SteamOS by itself doesn't suit my needs. Frustrations:
Workaround for automatically booting into Fedora: I created a script to set the next EFI boot priority automatically every time Fedora starts. Somehow, the Machine respects only the "next priority" setting, but not permanent ones.
Workaround for USB ports: I am buying a powered USB-A 3.0 hub to use with the front port. Hopefully, it will work properly (though only at 5 Gbps).
Workaround for microSD: Using a USB-A 3.0 card reader.
Workaround for firmware updates: Keep SteamOS installed, shrink its partition, and add Fedora for dual booting so I still have SteamOS available for future firmware updates.
Workaround for shutdown: Pressing the power button on the Machine when needed. Most of the time, I just put it to sleep.
Workaround for Wi-Fi: I created another dedicated 6 GHz-only SSID specific to the nearest AP. I still like the Steam Machine and have no regrets. I just wish Valve would fix the issues above to make the system much more pleasant to use. |

For the SD card, have you used any tools to validate that it’s actually 1TB? There are a few tools that do this for both Linux and Windows. |

Yes it is actually 1TB. The thing is that it doesn't even show up in parition manager. |

I really hope the Steam Machine is successful, but I'm so, so glad I didn't get one. |

Does it show up when you run lsblk? You might have to mount it manually/add it to fstab. |

I've had my steam machine apart a few times to add ram and a larger nvme drive. I found that the sd card piece was a little crooked (though mine worked fine). Perhaps yours is similar but doesn't work? |

Tbf it is a gaming console first. Though it is a little bit of a bummer it doesn't have better support for other Distros. |

A bunch of frustrations about things the console wasn’t supposed to do. |

Linux and 6ghz WiFi has never played well with me. What WiFi chipset does the machine use? Intel ones are horrendous. The “AMD” Mediatek chipsets seem better. But man does Linux not know what to do with 6ghz WiFi. It’s something Mac OS does flawlessly. But even windows struggles sometimes for seemingly no reason. |

That's actually crazy, apparently the support between distros vary heavily. Feels like something that'd be universally supported. |

You’d think within the same distros they’d be the same. But I was running a version of fedora from a few years ago and it worked flawlessly. Well worked in the windows way. But a few years later when I wanted to try fedora again it was nothing but trouble. I don’t get why it would regress like that. |

Might be something as simple as a bug in the newer driver, if you really wanted to dive into it give Journalctl a look and see if anything obvious pops out. |

The issue with Shut Down might be a missing kernel module. I don't have a Steam Machine (still on the waitlist and no longer sure I want to buy one), so I can't say for sure, but my laptop needs such a module. Might be worth checking the lsmod output on both systems, and see if SteamOS has anything that Fedora doesn't. |
