Russian authorities move to evict war refugees from occupied Ukraine and Russian border regions from temporary shelters south of Moscow. Many have nowhere else to go.

The Tula regional government has decided to evict residents from local temporary accommodation centers. Since 2022, the centers have housed refugees from Ukraine and Russia’s border communities.

Many are single mothers with children, older people, or people who only recently escaped the fighting and have yet to find work and settle in. They cannot return home: The war continues where they lived, and many homes and even entire communities have been destroyed.
