I've read something similar in my own home country where the local Russian controlled fascist party wants to import gas from Russia. IMO, this seems like a coordinated maneuver. It seems like the Russians activated their saboteurs in the hopes that they can get back some money for the war effort.

When in doubt, Russia apologists are fascists.

Visegrad Four urge Brussels to ease Russian energy phase-out rules

Really? Hungary and Slovakia I could believe, as they've both had major energy deals and a history of disagreement on the issue of Russian supply, but Poland would surprise me.

examines article

Yeah...It's kind of using "Visegrad" and "Hungary and Slovakia" interchangeably:

Slovakia and Hungary called on Brussels on Monday for greater flexibility in phasing out Russian gas

Bratislava said

Central European ministers want

The appeal follows pressure from the Visegrad Group — Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia and Poland — on EU leaders at their 15-16 October summit to reconsider measures to lower electricity bills in the region.

Central European consumers

Bratislava and Budapest argue

The Visegrad Group has access to several alternative energy sources and supply routes that bypass Russia

reads carefully

The impression I get from the article body and the linked pages is that there are two separate issues being raised:

  • The Visegrad Group as a whole has objected to carbon market rules. These deal with the use of fossil fuels, but are not an issue specific to Russian imports.

  • Hungary and Slovakia have objected to restrictions on Russian energy imports (which would not be new, and a position that their leadership has taken for a long time). Both had long-term supply agreements with Russia (in Hungary's case, post-dating the invasion, which I personally find much more objectionable, and in Slovakia's case, going well back).

I kind of feel like the article author is maybe intentionally blurring the lines between the two issues.

But wait there is more:

Under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

Article provides no current Hungarian government politician name that would support this position. Because there likely none - current government is way more pro-EU and less anti-Ukrainian (although still take anti-Ukrainian views of it's citizen into account due to being populist, and create issues to Ukraine, like with opening EU clusters).
