Seems like another US-Vendor-Lock:

  • New AI partnership: The German government (Economy and Research Ministries) and Nvidia signed a letter of intent at the first “Invest in Germany” summit in Berlin.
  • Goal: Advance cutting-edge AI models for “Physical AI” (e.g., robots) and bring industrial AI into broad use, building a leading AI ecosystem in Europe.
  • Access: Nvidia will make its AI models available not only to large corporations but also to small and mid-sized businesses and research institutions.
  • Funding: No official figures. A media report says the government plans to contribute a three-digit million amount, partly to rent computing capacity in Deutsche Telekom’s AI cloud.
  • Merz: Germany is acting from a position of strength despite geopolitical challenges; he urged companies to open up industrial data for AI and pointed to reforms (less bureaucracy, digital administration, social systems), the special infrastructure fund, and higher defense spending.
  • Huang: Data should be treated as a national resource and kept in the country (“national intelligence”); AI should complement and scale German engineers’ expertise, not replace it. Nvidia says it invested nearly $1 billion in Germany last year.
  • Summit: Two-day event with about 200 business leaders, aimed at attracting more private investors. It continues Tuesday.

https://www.eetimes.com/germany-redirects-intel-funds-into-new-wave-of-semiconductor-projects/

Germany has quietly launched one of its most consequential semiconductor funding efforts since the start of the EU Chips Act. Originally intended in part to support Intel’s long-delayed €30 billion (approximately $34.8 billion) megafab in Magdeburg, billions of euros in federal and state money are now being re-channeled into a diverse set of technology projects, ranging from mature-node capacity in Dresden to quantum-sensor-based metrology equipment in Munich.

Germany is no longer friends with Intel.

Germany has friended Nvidia.

When Germany joins the AI hypetrain, you know the bubble is about to pop. It is similar to reading about bitcoin in the local newspaper.

Bitcoin still had a really high valuation last time I checked... crypto is not the big hype anymore, but you can't really say that the crypto bubble has popped. Unfortunately.

Yes Bitcoin is still there, but there are cycles. And every time before they reach a new peak you hear about it everywhere. So far always a clear sign to sell an take your gains, because the price is about to take a nose dive, before it eventually increases again.

How sweet, we can't properly fund healthcare, but got plenty of money to waste on AI.
