In 2014, Israeli settler Yosef Ben-David kidnapped 16-year-old Palestinian boy Mohammed Abu Khdeir and forced him to drink gasoline. He then burned him alive. Ben-David was the ringleader. He and two teenage nephews abducted Abu Khdeir off a street near his East Jerusalem home on July 2, 2014. They drove him to a forest, choked him, beat him unconscious, and burned him to death. An autopsy showed smoke in his lungs, meaning he was alive when he was burned. Ben-David was convicted of murder in 2016. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years. His two accomplices, who were minors at the time, were sentenced to life and 21 years. The court rejected Ben-David's insanity plea. The judges said the murder was a strategic terror attack that ignited a wildfire in East Jerusalem. In 2018, the Supreme Court upheld the convictions. Ben-David died in prison in 2026 while serving his life sentence.
