EDIT: The SWP are modern-day communists. Articles from the SWP are pretty heavy on the hyperbole, so take it with a grain of salt. Communist rhetoric aside though, the article did strike me as a very frank and accurate assessment of the current state of affairs. European media seem hesitant to state the obvious: the US is openly blackmailing Ukraine (and to a lesser extent Europe) to surrender and submit to Russian demands. And these hostile actions by the US are likely to escalate further is and to also target Europe more explicitly, regardless of the outcome of the US midterms. Europe is able to deter Russia, but its become obvious that we’ll need to deter the US as well. If Europe doesn’t act decisively against America’s attempts to undermine our security, then we’ll end up being carved up in Western and Eastern spheres of influence. |

That was always the design post WW2. Europe is Americas bitch. Dependant for military hardware, leadership, and financial backing. |

Well, 80 years ago maybe. But nowadays Europe doesn’t truly depend on the US. There’s a lot of talk about dependence on US trade and US tech, but that’s true for pretty much every developed nation on the planet (including China). The key difference is that Europe depends on the US for defense: military capabilities, logistics, intelligence. Without US support, Russia actually has the upper hand when it comes to military strength and capabilities. The problem is that it is incredible difficult to collectively decouple from the US. Many politicians were reluctant to rearm because they feared overinvestment and overpreparedness for a hypothetical threat that, depending on where in Europe you actually lived, might never even manifest. Even more were reluctant to invest billions in building hypothetical, sovereign alternatives to hardware that could easily be easily purchased from the US. And the politicians from smaller European states even questioned if being dependent on the UK, Germany or France was really that much better than being dependent on the US. The fact remains that ‘Europe’ consists of many individual states, with individual potential and individual interests. A collective response, requires even more unity and even more cooperation. Instead, Europeans are increasing voting nationalists into power. |
