On October 14, 2026, an Israeli airstrike hit an apartment building in the al-Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City. The strike killed 33-year-old Reem Awad and set the building on fire. Her daughter, 2-year-old Maryam Ahmed Ghanem, was trapped inside the burning apartment.

Palestinian journalist Ali al-Jaafrawi captured the rescue on video. He heard the girl screaming, went into the flames, and pulled her out. "I saw a woman on fire inside the apartment," he said. Maryam suffered severe burns to her face and body. She was taken to al-Shifa Hospital.

Maryam's father had already been killed in an earlier Israeli strike. She is now orphaned. The attack happened despite a ceasefire that came into effect in October 2025, which Israel has repeatedly violated with continued strikes on Gaza.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the attack. "The horrific video of a little girl surrounded by fire as her mother burns to death in their home exemplifies the reality of Israel's genocide in Gaza," the group said. Source: The New Arab, CAIR.
