Since October 7 2023 Israeli forces killed hundreds of journalists in Gaza. According to the UN, Israeli forces killed 242 Palestinian journalists by August 2025. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported at least 184 Palestinian journalists killed by Israel. And by September 2026 Gaza government media office said the number reached 263.

This is the deadliest war for journalists in known history. A report by the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs says this war killed more journalists than the combined total of US Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and war in Afghanistan.

Reporters Without Borders says the Israeli army intentionally targeted Palestinian journalists. The CPJ said in 2024 that Israel's war on Gaza is more deadly to journalists than any previous war. Israel damaged or destroyed 48 media facilities in Gaza.

UNESCO gave its 2024 World Press Freedom Prize to Palestinian journalists in Gaza. The Guardian reported that Israel targeted Hamas-affiliated journalists despite their non-involvement in combat. This is a clear pattern of targeting the press.
