Just texted my boss, telling them that I'm taking a day off because I hurt everywhere, I'm an emotional wreck and I'm exhausted. What's new is that I'm going to feel ZERO guilt. Normally, I take days off feeling like a worthless, pathetic, unacceptable, insufficient loser, but not today. I know that I need to tend to my body and "soul". Cheers. |

Hey just want to chime in here for a second to validate. That time is for you to take and is meant for exactly that reason you are taking it for. Don’t feel guilty. It is there for a purpose and this is that purpose. Matter of fact, don’t feel selfish. You’re not doing this just for yourself but also the good of the business you work for. I realized this as a manager once. My employees need time off and I would much rather them tell me they want the day off than come in feeling terrible and causing issues for the rest of us or the customers. You think of people who go off on customers or their coworkers or try to work with food but are physically ill and coughing all over a customer’s order or are so sick that they literally don’t even do any work at all for their entire shift. Like you’re no good to the business in this shape. Stay home and get rested up and come back when you feel better. But on the real side of things apart from this temporary place of employment…it’s more than okay to be selfish when it comes to your wellbeing. Your job will be there in the morning but you may not if you don’t take care of yourself and you as the human is more important than any business. I don’t feel bad about taking time off and I’ve thankfully had bosses who understand that. Also remember that when you take a day off, it is not a request, it is a notification. You’re not asking for permission to take time off like it’s scheduled PTO, you are letting them know “I cannot come in because I don’t feel well.” And that’s that. I hope you feel better and get the rest you need! |

Taking time for yourself is good, mental health is unappreciated. But your boss does not need to know why you are sick. Sometimes honesty can be used against you. Just say you are sick. They don’t need any more information than that. |

I've seen my fair amount of people in their death beds. They might regret many decisions or wish they'd make some things differently, but they never regret not have worked more. Enjoy your day off! You deserve it, and much more! |
