I gave up trying once I realized the large majority of humans today dont know what a filepath is. I'll retreat to my cave now.

I mean knowing what something is and using it can be 2 different things. Most people can save things to their computers or make a folder. They just have no reason to know the technical term or how the computer saves it behind the scenes, if you told them they'd likely remember.

Always hated the if someone doesn't know a specialized word in your profession or hobby they're dumb mentality

With federation, you shouldn't need to consider that, browse, and participate with remote instances freely. Unless what you want to see is largely defederated, in which case, you should probably think about why it's against the social contract of so many instances.

maybe if the majority of instances stopped devaluing genocide by grouping mass slaughter and colonialism with it I wouldn't notice such a lack of opposition to any anti-capitalist ideology.

There are a wide range of conservative opinions that I don’t find problematic. Certainly some are but same can be said for any party. OFF WITH THEIR HEAD

I used to be more leftist than I am now actually - discourse with leftist trolls has made me realize that much of the rhetoric is childish thinking (not all - I suspect there's far more to my journey, but some of the talking points definitely are).

A lot of people treat leftist beliefs like rightist ones, where the goal seems to be to become holier than thou and look down upon anyone who has not read the latest in an absolutely endless array of books.

Then, and I don't mean to be a dick, but perhaps you should not recreationally shit on Lemmy?

Someone who's new here might stumble upon your comment and take it as an honest depiction that Lemmy is so toxic it's not worth bothering with, and just head back to Facebook/Twitter/Reddit/etc. because while both are deemed toxic at least those are easier to join/stay on.

Fedi does suck in your not into tech or leftist politics. Those are where the bulk of the content comes from. The memes can be funny sometimes but the lack of video clips really holds it back. People love short video clips but they're expensive to host. Catbox.moe is a good solution but you're still pretty restricted in the size of clips you can upload.

tech or leftist politics

because that's what the public that uses it likes.

bluesky was probably worse before the migration. more people = more content.

i do like its left bias and wish we keep it though. breath or fresh air from fascist-owned social media.

Fediverse isn't all that great though despite all the cope, scroll through all and you see that it's 50% news slop about how US conservatives bad that's designed to keep you scrolling, 35% porn, 5% leftoid memes and 10% for everything else, pretty much like reddit minus the copious amount of rightoids. The culture is also pretty much the same. Engagement and upvote hunting also does play a role...

Hey docile fuckstick, employing insults that involve slurs makes one bigoted.

In no way shape or form does anybody believe that you're a leftist. No leftist thinks like you. No leftist wants to use slurs. You're undoubtedly another shitlib social Democrat who fancies themselves a leftist but won't read a book beyond Harry Potter.

More folks need to get comfortable with the block button. I have a list of users blocked for being shitty, but there sometimes seems to be this weird mentality that blocking users instead of debating them is weak or something.

Also blocking communities, if you browse all and hate most of the posts and comments there.

the nrl community is dead, the ai community is dead, mistral comm is dead, brisbane comm is dead, fitness dead, is there a gym comm? hardstyle dead, lemmy shitpost: https://lemmy.world/post/53465720 full of american politics, technology full of anti-ai and anti-big tech articles (honestly tiring after 4 million articles on the same thing), no economic comm that isn’t american and iirc that one ...

I'm quite happy with a few communities here: books, cats, cooking, Dull Men's Club.

The cocktails and DIY communities are also nice but not as active.

I can't agree more that this place is absolutely suffocated by American politics. I block a TON and still feel flooded :(

Ah but then they wouldn't be "tankies" - that term basically (even if not technically) meaning those who deny the reality of events such as the Tiannamen Square Massacre, instead preferring "alternative facts" like how poor Russia was "forced" into invading Ukraine - won't someone think of the poor genocidal nations of the earth, who just want the freedom to be left in peace, in order to murder everyone when they feel like it! You all are such big meanie weanie-faces, not acknowledging the superiority of North Korea!? Why, if you would just read this book... (10 pages later) then you would willingly guillotine yourself, for the glory of mudder Russia the whole world!

Maybe I'll switch to become MAGA, just out of spite?

There is no right instance for that, because the whole fediverse doesnt have that many users, and of those, a great many post that kind of stuff. It's not my cup of tea either (at least not to such a great degree, without a community for most of my hobbies) but I'm OK enough with it to stay for the shitposts and to hope it grows (but not too much!)

On the fediverse you can hold real conversations with people in comments. That rarely happens on Reddit.

However as the fediverse grows, even as we are seeing in this thread, it becomes increasingly impossible.

edit Wow there really are a lot of comments here. Are people botting these or are we reaching this real level of interaction? Forget about upvotes or views this is crazy.

While that is true and important to mention, im also getting reports from teachers saying a lot of the kids, even the older ones, also dont even know of the concept of a file. An image is just an image that can be dragged between apps. A folder is for apps. Everythings an app!

Been some time since i was substitute, so maybe the claims are a bit exaggerated. Could be the commenter was referring to this trend?
