As an employee, the only time HR is on your side is when you are the revenue stream and your skills are rare.

The HR person at my company is really nice. I hope she gets a nicer job because being the bringer of shit news feels like it’ll be soul killing.

I know this is a typical meme, but to be fair,
In the 6 companies I've worked in so far, I never saw the case of HR pretending to be anyone's friend in order to screw you.

It was always clear HR is there to enforce procedures and legal compliance, occasionally organize trainings, and not much more than that.

I went to university for HR and one of the biggest concepts they emphasized was the importance of remaining neutral, since HR guidance can affect the entire workplace. We were also taught that part of our job is to protect the organization from lawsuits, so always do the right thing. But as soon as I entered the workforce, I learned very quickly that companies will ignore your advice and order you to do illegal shit.
Miserable, toxic workplaces.. I have worked for good workplaces as well but moved on to social work as I find it much more fulfilling.

Mr. Rat is an excellent HR representative, and was able to fully inform the employee of their rights.

Never! Rats would never join HR.

In the wild, rats live in highly social colonies, where cooperation, grooming, and communal living help them thrive.

Rats are more likely to start or join a union.

It's a corporate rat, in a food scarce environment so maybe it's turned to cannibalism in the role of HR

in my experience they are mostly there to run payroll and benefits and write office memos when company policies are changed.

I feel like a lot of people want HR to be the villain I guess because it's an easy target and they are the face of hiring/firing, though they don't really make the hire/fire decisions at all in most orgs.

I honestly loved HR when I had a good employer but it was only to cover Mat leave. I love helping people with there schedules, organizing, helping people through tough times and I absolutely love hiring people. But when it comes to suppressing workers rights, its fucken awful.

But remember if you ever use those rights we'll look for any reason to fire you then no one will hire you because you'll be known as someone that sues your employer (I have no anecdotal evidence, I just feel like I've heard people talking about it before. Might just have been online conspiracy)

A family is a group of people you're forced to be a part of that expects you to drop everything at a moment's notice and help them with minimal compensation if any.

That's exactly how your boss wants you to view the company.

Or when someone else in the company fucked up. A manager denied my breaks and lunch even after I told him it was illegal. He is in a different state so the rules in his state may be different.

After my initial complaints to the general HR line went unnoticed, I escalated the issue to a much higher level manager.

HR called me back within an hour. HR knew this was a big problem.

At one job there was a terrible HR person that sucked the joy out of everything she touched. She eventually was let go.

Her assistant took over and was awesome. She became my work wife.

HR probably made them say that instead of telling you the truth.

Someone you work-marry at your workplace. You can have work-children and adopt work-pets with them. I still remember when my first work-son graduated work-university. Ah, I was so work-proud.

Yep. We just hung out and talked a lot. Went to lunch a lot. There was no sexual component. She was engaged and I was divorced.

I had a boss say the line 'we're a family here' and I could not contain myself. I laughed so hard. He ended leaving for another job that paid more so who's laughing now. He had literally no idea what my job title was or my role. We were a department of four. That guy was fucking awesome.

That’s called “friendship” however if sexual component was the only thing missing then that’s called a emotional affair.

Weird!

I did it in the army and loved helping soliders so much when I got out I was like HR for sure I can keep helping on the outside too. I lasted 6 months. I love helping people but I hate getting told no you have to make it more difficult for them.

They'll simply consult the AI, which uses weights you see, so there's no saying why exactly you're rejected. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So we should skip the lawsuit step and go straight to setting fires on the way out, got it

There's an interesting juxtaposition between the sort of person who wants to work in HR, and what HR is actually designed to be.

HR simply enforces the policies set by the board / owner

Feels like HR should be some kind of third party representative guild that companies must contract with, maintains a strict code of ethics that doesn't favor the employer, actually fights for the employee, and can't be ordered around by corporations.

... I'm... mostly describing some kind of union, aren't I? Lol

I worked at a non-union hospital for years and then it became union. Things improved so much for me. I hope you get there, it's not perfect but at least you're not just living at the whims of your manager.

I've heard this term before from other people. My previous manager's boyfriend referred to me as her work boyfriend just because we talked a lot. We were about the same age and grew up in similar socioeconomic environments.

During the hiring process at one of my old jobs I asked about a line in the contact/policy that said we can't talk about our salaries with our colleagues, which is a right protected by labour laws, and the HR woman literally said "wow are you really gonna be that guy"
And this was a medium sized business.
Fuck HR.
