My trick is if I want a different knot, I just add more loops that I stick things through. This probably isn't the ideal approach.
You know what they say: if you can't tie a knot, tie a lot! |

Sounds like this inline truckers hitch.
I've not seen that one before, but it looks pretty strong. I'll need to keep it in mind. I typically do a lot of camping that might involve stringing up a clothesline or just a ridge line to throw a tarp over. So I need something that will hold tension but won't necessarily cost a life. This is the version of the trucker's hitch that I tend to practice: YouTube link. The guy has a little bit of fluff in his video but he otherwise does a really good job of teaching the knot. |

I'm not sure if this is even suitable for climbing. I like it because it's easy to untie even after being tightened.
Sounded like the kind of knot that's good for climbing. Bomb proof and easy to untie. So I looked it up and it does indeed get used, but it looks too complicated, so risky. Never seen it done, but also, never seen anyone risk tying two ropes together. I'd rather anchor in and wait for a rescue. |

The self locking bit is just a taut line hitch, and you can do that on any midline loop by running the line through twice. I like the sheepshank version because it basically just shakes loose when you remove the tension/untie the knot. With the classic truckers hitch, that slip knot can jam. Id use, what I think is called, the slippery half hitch. Its like the slipknot but you add two extra twists before pulling the bite through for that midline loop. The alpine butterfly is also a popular option, but that can be hard to untie after heavy load too. |

Trucker's hitch. It's the greatest knot of all. (obligatory Ylvis) |

I believe that double fisherman's knot is what a climber would use in a situation like this. |

I can feel it coming. I am going to get interested in knots soon. I learned the Secure Ian Knot to tie my shoes a few months ago and the hunger has started to grow.
You should definitely avoid buying some paracord then, it's knot like they're sold in cheap smaller bundles (3/5m) with all flavours included so you can check which one you like most before going all in |

It's superior by far when you may want to ever actually u tie the rope. But my experience with some ropes is that the action of loading and unloading or otherwise jostling the knot can cause it to come loose. I sometimes tie off the loose ends together to prevent that but it's hella ugly and bulky. Any advice on using this knot?
That is why I used this rather than the reef knot. This wont come undone when not under constant tension. If you need extra security it's often better to tie a stopper knot in the ends of the lines rather than tying them together. |

"Can you make the ends fuzzy?" "I'm a frayed knot".
I actually gave it a once over with a lighter to stop the fraying. |
