Yea, one of those weird things in gen 1 you can use the statues as fishing spots. Not sure what the actual catch table is as I have only done it with the old rod and you only get Magikap with it.

You CAN actually catch Mew in the original Blue and Red. It's similar to the item duplication glitch.

I went back years later and was able to do it myself after I read it wasn't just some urban legend.

Mew glitch. Defeat nugget bridge, DO NOT ENCOUNTER THE TRAINER LOOKING NORTH ON THE GRASS WHERE ABRA SPAWNS, catch an Abra, be sure to visit the pokemon center in cerulean city before this next part. Line up directly north of the trainer by the Abra spawn, just one block out of his line of sight. Press down and start at the same time. If you did it right, the start menu opens and the trainer is visible in the bottom of the screen. Use teleport on Abra, returning to cerulean city. Go into the gym, defeat the first swimmer, then return to nugget bridge. Upon entering the route, a battle should start and that'll be your mew. Catch it.

I don't recall it exactly but its something along the lines of lose a battle to a particular slowpoke, travel to that patch of grass next to nugget bridge and use the escape rope or teleport trick when starting the battle with the trainer there, head to lavander town and head west. Once you leave the city you run into a wild Mew.

It's real, but it's yet another gen1 memory corruption glitch that reliably overwrites the Pokémon encounter table if you do it exactly right. If you search for "Mew glitch" you'll find a bunch of videos on it. It involves some very precise steps and specific battles on that one bridge where you get a golden nugget, IIRC.

There is a real glitch, but it had nothing to do with that truck. I outlined it in a nearby comment. The trick is actually abusing a trainer battle script defect related to how opening dialogue boxes were stored in memory. Essentially manipulating the value to select any pokemon we want based on special values (you could use the glitch to get any pokemon, but mew is obviously the highest value target)

That's the easy way. You can force any pokemon to spawn with a combination of flying/teleporting away the frame a battle triggers and a mon with the right stats vs wild Ditto.

Makes sense; IDK how the game logic works, but Magikarp is probably what the game defaults to if there's no other Pokémon in the lookup table that indicate what can spawn in the particular area you're in. Since statues are not meant to be fished in, it would make sense for that table to be empty/non-existent.

The best part about this glitch is that all the silly steps make the instructions seem like every other fake, made up tutorial (I spent countless hours trying and failing to unlock Sonic & Tails in Smash Bros Melee back in the day), except this time it's actually real.

Yeah I think I remember that too. In gen 1 there's the "mew glitch" which relies on taking very specific actions so the list of possible wild Pokémon data does not get properly set when transitioning to a new zone.

It's plausible that it could affect fishing too, especially since many of those locations presumably don't have encounter tables, as they're not intended to have wild Pokémon in them.

There were tons of supposed ways to get mew that were total bull. It's kind of fascinating how that info spread across the world's playgrounds

In gen 1 if you loaded an invalid Pokemon you'd get a glitch Pokemon made from garbage code the game reads from where it shouldn't, or MISSINGNO. depending on its Pokedex number. Gen 1 is held together with chewing gum and prayers, and there's very little in the way of error handling. Later games would handle this by defaulting to a giant black and white question mark called ????? that would usually crash the game if you battled with it and could normally only be found using a GameShark.

TheZZaZZGlitch is a wonderful channel for learning about just how hilariously broken RBY are. It's a miracle the game is as functional as it is.
