A senseless destruction of so many animals' lives for the pursuit of enriching the few.

Stop supporting Big Tech, starting with your browser, search engine and email... a small act goes a long way.

if Google truly ravaged this forest without permission, the only acceptable punishment would be to:

  • Mandate the complete restoration, plant as many trees in the area as there were before

  • Establish a fund (obviously footed by Google) managed by a gov selected conservation group, to oversee the restoration of the forest for the next 50 years (or whatever long it takes for those trees to be a similar age as they were before illegally cutting them down)

  • Pay a fine proportional to their net worth

  • Jail time for the executives overseeing this project

Odds any of that will happen?

The world will continue to be broken until there are consequences for the wealthy.

And wolves who won't survive, need euthanizing, won't reproduce, need relocation.

It's the same thing. You asked knowing the answer already.

The original reporting from The Guardian instead of churnalist garbage Tom's Hardware.

That's the original article about Google decimating trees for the data center. This one is about the wolves that now have nowhere to live and hunt.

Never mind, I guess the original did mention the poor wolfies...

Now The Guardian reports that wolves, who used to live in the forests, are roaming into villages neighboring these man-made muddy wastelands.

(Link leads directly from Tom's Hardware to the article I linked.)

"We had wolves coming into the village because all the wild animals moved out of the forest", explained Anni Ranta, 53

Is just a quote taken from The Guardian article I linked.

This article is just a vastly shittier rip-off of that article from The Guardian, just covering a specific part of it.

I stand corrected! I did read the original article, but I don't remember that part...

What are the odds? I don't know them.

I would advocate for a boycott and helping people migrate off Google.

If you're on Android, consider:

https://grapheneos.org/

or

https://e.foundation/e-os/

If you're using Google's services, consider trying to run some of your own:

Syncthing
Nextcloud
Comaps

If you're using their AI, consider trying out local models using something like Unsloth or llama.cpp

If we can't get our elected representatives to help us, gotta help ourselves.

"Odds any of that will happen?" is just another way of saying "it will never happen". You know what you meant and now you're trying to weasel out of it. Own your statement.

I am not. I offered some ways I think individuals could act and have an impact.

I don't live in the jurisdiction this will be tried. I know where I think the odds lie in the US.

You sure seem hell-bent on making someone who agrees with you feel bad. 🤷‍♂️

I don't think you know what they meant. Why is it so damned common to assume that people are lying about something for no reason? Like if someone says they didn't mean something, usually they probably didn't. It might sound a certain way to you, but it's a shit trait of Lemmy how often people will tell you "no you fucking meant something else and I know it for a fact" when they don't at all.

That's like 10% of Lemmy responses in a nutshell. If we're only talking political topics, 50%.

"that while datacentres brought a limited number of jobs, potentially boosting the local econom"

Uh, no they fucking don't.

There will initially be a massive influx of construction workers that will overwhelm the local economy, drive up housing prices, then leave a gaping hole when they leave.

Even a massive data center would bring, MAYBE 100 jobs, and most of those won't be hired locally. Maybe some janitors or security.

Small communities are statistically worse off, hosting data centers, at least ones built by Google. They are one of the fucking worst. They run fast and loose, lie to elected and land owners alike, and just don't give a shit. They really think that people should be happy and proud that Google has chosen to put a data center there.

These large companies are run by sociopaths who manage via spreadsheets. They only look at profit margins for their decisions.

A Google site in Texas just arbitrarily closed down a county road that passes through part of the construction site.

Didn't get a permit, didn't notify police or fire of the road closure, AND DIDN'T EVEN FUCKING TALK TO A SINGLE ELECTED.

They are fucking psychopaths.

Aren't they able to repossess the land from Google and revoke their permit to operate?

I read the thread, mostly. I think sometimes people come off wrong and deserve benefit of doubt.
