The US supreme court has cleared the way for New Hampshire to prohibit student IDs as a form of voter identification ahead of November’s midterm elections.

In a brief unsigned order, justices sided with a Republican National Committee (RNC)-backed appeal on the matter. They cited a longstanding rule that lower federal courts should not “alter election rules” too close to election day.

The challenge stemmed from a directive that New Hampshire state officials made earlier this year, which stated student IDs could not be used as a form of identification when voting at the polls, even as a backup under what is known as “safety valve” identification.

New Hampshire has required voters to present an ID to vote since 2012, but earlier this year the state’s Republican governor, Kelly Ayotte, signed a law tightening the rules by removing student IDs from the list of standard forms of voter ID.

Why is America so fucking weird

We have one party that's kinda trying, and one party that want to burn it all down, and any third party mostly fucks over the first one.

We're not okay.

Corruption. Hostile takeover of our government that took decades to mature.

I think you give the first party too much credit. They show they know what the truly right thing to do is (unlike the second, which just demonizes it), but don't put any real aggressiveness towards making those things happen for fear of putting off just enough followers of the second party to lose elections. We need bold "Don't give a fuck" leadership on our side, but that only exists on the dark side. The first party doesn't understand (or in some cases are paid off well enough to ignore) that those wishy-washy voters are just following the bold leaders, and so we need some "take no prisoners" leadership on the side of good for them to pay attention to.

When exercising a right there shouldn't be any requirement of identification.
Government already has the tools to identify its citizens and if it doesn't its not doing its job.

Oh hey, the Supreme Court forgot to read the Constitution. Again.

I mean, it'd help if people voted every single election though too, most certainly including primaries.

No one is chasing flaky people who might vote if everything is just perfect for them. You can't expect bold leadership if you don't have voters bold enough to show up every single time.

Voter suppression playing out exactly as Republicans have been planning it for decades.

I had so many friends who are usually well intentioned and intelligent people who defended new laws forcing voter ID sickens me. They just bought right into the notion that "well if I gotta show ID to buy beer why shouldn't I show ID to vote?" as if it wasn't pure fascist propaganda
