The .ml is a good indicator for crazy, but I think they have a point. Ireland is divided along religious lines, which makes the North side with the UK to a large extent. I know someone from NI, who is pretty happy about being part of the UK as well. Not a representative sample, but opened my eyes to the complexity of the divided Ireland. Edit: feel free to elaborate how you saw things when living there, would be happy to hear more perspectives. |

Then you'll be familiar with how there have been 43 surveys on the subject in the last 18 years and in all of them Northern Ireland voted against reunification. Like it's a complicated issue dating back 500 years, but it's not like the people haven't been given a voice on the subject. There's a reason why it's been a permanent civil war up until Good Friday. |

I really have no skin in the game except that I volunteer for a charity promoting artistic works of Celtic origin but I am not myself personally involved in Irish politics. |

The key difference is there's a mechanism under the Good Friday Agreement by which reunification can occur, there has been for nearly 30 years, it requires the consent of the population. At the time of partition what is now NI wanted to remain part of the UK and while this was colonised by England 400 odd years prior at some point it's probably good to take the people's opinion into account. The demographics have now shifted but repeated surveys have not indicated a sufficient change in what the population as a whole want to trigger a border poll. There's more to consider here than historical ideals too, like actual practical aspects of any reunification - more than 25% of the NI population are employed directly by the public sector for instance not to mention those on govt contracts, the NHS for all it's faults is a significant factor for a lot of people, what benefits are available. |

Scotland was a source of fundraising and other types of aid. Former MI5 agent Willie Carlin said: "There were safe houses in Glasgow and Stirling. The ferry [between Scotland and Northern Ireland] was pivotal in getting arms into the north—and anything like checkpoints, or armed police and Army in Scotland would have b******d that all up." An Irish government memo written by David Donoghue stated: "The commonest contribution of Scots UDA and UVF is to send gelignite. Explosives for the north were mostly shipped in small boats which set out at night from the Scottish coast and made contact at sea with vessels from Ulster ports." Donoghue noted the links between Orange Lodges in Scotland and loyalist paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland and that membership of the Orange Order in Scotland at the time was 80,000, and was concentrated in Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Inverness. The Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee noted in its report that "in 1992 it was estimated that Scottish support for the UDA and UVF might amount to £100,000 a year." |

What's that got to with the price of a dram? By that very same argument Ireland itself was "along for the ride" because there were pro union Irish people as well. 80k members raising £100k isn't exactly impressive in a nation of 5.5 million with a GDP of £231 billion. Also, in 1992, Scotland did not have devolution. It was controlled via Westminster. Use your heid yi numpty. |
