The Jewish Agency for Israel was originally called the Jewish Agency for Palestine. It was established in 1929. It was the operative branch of the World Zionist Organization. Its job was to build a Jewish national home in Palestine. It bought land for Jewish communities and helped Jews immigrate to the area. It also formed the Haganah, the Zionist militia that later became the Israeli army.

David Ben-Gurion was chairman of the executive committee from 1935. He declared Israel's independence on May 14 1948 in that exact role. He then became the first prime minister of Israel. After Israel was created, the organization changed its name to the Jewish Agency for Israel.

This name change is very revealing. They used the name Palestine when they were building the state. But once they had the state, they switched the name to Israel. It shows the whole project was about taking Palestine and turning it into Israel. And today the organization still brings immigrants to Israel.
