This is such an odd story, because for the Gulf of Mexico/America and Lake Ontario/America, he issued executive orders under authority of the president. But now it seems like he spoke to the Google CEO directly and casually asked for the change.

It's odd because you know both Google and Apple will comply if Trump actually issues an executive order. He can do that. He can name all the oceans after himself, his country, his children, or whatever he wants. And American companies will toe the line. Maybe it's Google's turn to present him with a participation trophy this time. Anyway, it has no bearing on what other countries call things.

If I didn't think Trump was an imbecile — which I do — I would suggest maybe he was joking. But it's more likely he forgot he needs an executive order (or forgot he hasn't issued it yet) and just asked as if he had.
