The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in central Malibu is one of the most deadly road in California.

I knew it was bad. I didn't know it was this bad.

Ah, yes, the two stages of speed camera deployment:

  1. There's too many speeders! We need to put up speed cameras!

  2. We need to take down the speed cameras! There's too many speeders!

Turns out almost literally everyone speeds. Even people who don't want to speed end up speeding because the guy behind them is threatening to use his vehicle as a weapon if you don't go as fast as he wants you to.

So 100,000 people times about 140$ per ticket, thats if everyone did not go to traffic school. Traffic school would be about 240. They made at least 14,000,000$ in those 10 days.

Not me!

I drive like a very old woman* who is hyper cautious of all other forces on the road (pedestrians, cyclists and other cars). And when someone inevitably gets on my bumper because I’m going a bit under the speed LIMIT in the slow lane, I smile and wave.

I’m not operating my totally not a murder machine in a way that endangers anyone if I can damn well help it.

  • not to denigrate old women as it always seems to be old men who mix the pedal and plow into a farmers markets at full tilt

Same here, set cruise and don’t touch speed again. I also don’t take highways anymore and wow has that helped! The reduced traffic and speeds on non-highway roads makes people substantially less assholy.

Takes a bit longer to get where I’m going, and some people pass in very scary ways, but it feels so much less stressful overall, so that’s worth it.

I do the same, it also has the added benefit of being more efficient with your battery if you drive an EV.

Exactly why I started, wouldn’t go back for anything!

I drive an EV after two successive hybrids.

I was probably the average speedster on freeways prior to the first one (2007), but ever since have been all about trying to maximize that sweet mileage. Also be less of a menace, even though I’ve always been super cautious behind the wheel, even when driving absurdly oversized vehicles.
