Muammar Gaddafi was captured and summarily executed on October 20, 2011. Libyan rebel fighters from the Misrata militias did it. His fleeing convoy was disabled by NATO airstrikes in Sirte during the 2011 civil war.

The armed rebellion was part of Arab Spring protests. The protests aimed to end his 42-year authoritarian dictatorship. This led to a NATO military intervention. The intervention was authorized by UN Security Council Resolution 1973 after violent state crackdowns on civilian demonstrations. Resolution 1973 established a no-fly zone over Libya and authorized member states to take all necessary measures to protect civilians from imminent regime massacres in Benghazi.

So NATO intervened in Libya. But look at the pattern.

Analysis: The West invades or bombs countries it can beat. The US and its allies invaded Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq. They intervened in Libya and Syria. In January 2026 the US raided Caracas, captured President Nicolás Maduro, and now runs Venezuela as a vassal state, controlling its oil and finances. They do this in the name of human rights and regime change.

But when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 and annexed Crimea in 2014, the West did not directly intervene militarily. The consequences were too high. They sent weapons and sanctions, but no NATO troops fought Russia.

And when it comes to China and North Korea, the West is silent. It knows it cannot topple or invade them. So it does not try.

The pattern is not about authoritarianism. Many Western allies are authoritarian. The pattern is about power. The West acts where it can win and stays out where it cannot. The rules are enforced selectively. This is the double standard.
