Sean Connery in 1964 (on the set of Goldfinger) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster in 2024. Both age 34 in their respective photos.

I wonder if it is also differing beauty standards. Older men used to be considered more sexy. Nowadays a guy over 40 is basically a corpse but if you watch old movies you’ll see guys who look 50 or even 60 in hero roles, and they get the girl, too. So what I’m saying is, Sean Connery might never be chosen as a leading actor today because he looks too old.

Ouch!

I know 50+ year old men who get plenty, and look pretty hot. The key, besides genetics, seems to be both not smoking and doing enough sports.

I would expect emissions to cumulatively impact air quality, is that not the case?

To begin, it does accumulate in the region where it is created, but of course it diffuses over time, so 10 pollution could be 7 locally and 3 globally. The heavy elements (soot) never get very far and naturally fall out of the air. Some elements are broken down by sunlight. Some bind to rain and are washed into the ground. If pollution is constant, you reach an equilibrium in the air quality. Decreasing output slowly lowers that equilibrium and improves the air quality in the end.

Here his is in dr no a year later looking more like he's 40 instead of 55, given he's in makup, but the crows-feet smile lines aren't doing him any favors. and here he is 7 years later in 71 (41 years old) TBH, the effect on skin from smoking seem to hit like a truck in the 40's, that's gotta be severe tanning, smoking and some really rough genetics.

He would have been early 30s in Dr No, it was released two years before Goldfinch. Still, though, it's crazy how much the lifestyles of previous generations differ from current lifestyles and how you can literally read it on people's faces.

Thomas is like a genetically engineered femboy for Hollywood billionaires.

No need to go out and molest nubile young boys in the Caribbean, this bad boy is of legal age and doesn't look a day past 15.

Like a human version of a toy dog, but with a genetically superior bussy.

If a woman is a bitch, or hysterical, or bloody-minded continually Which one of these is grounds for self defense again?

I already wrote about my opinion in another root.
Any physical force applied to another human is bad, especially to a weaker one. But we live in a crazy, mad world.

For example, If I’d see someone dangerous on a stree, in a state of psychosis (or just aggressive), approaching me - I would not look at gender. And, in general, if anyone is aggressive to me, I would be aggressive in the return - that’s all.

I agree that Sean words seems very misogynistic, but personally I’m doubting that he meant “I would beat woman that annoyed me”.

Or maybe he was, we’ll never know.

He was the kid in Love Actually who learned the drums. I think he also reprised the role in Red Nose Day Actually.

More recently he was the dude in The Queens Gambit. I forget if he was a love interest or an antagonist (I kinda want to say a bit of column A and a bit of column B...) but he was in it.

The difference is 1 part genetics, 1 part skin care routines, 1 part sun protection habits, 7 parts a lifetime with or without smoking and being surrounded by people smoking at nearly all times.

Idk, I've been around and been a smoker a large portion of life, I look like I'm a young 25 still despite being 35 (it ain't me saying, I just got a young face). Some people just look younger for longer.

I don't feel 25, my body hates what I've done to it 😂

In a world of Cornell predators, I have to agree, there’s primal elements of his comment I do not sit well with.

Then I look at Israel - a case of someone playing a World’s Biggest Victims card so hard they get away with the most reprehensible thing (to the point they’re harming the rest of said victims)

Chances are, none of us will ever run into a person acting so horrible, so evil, they deserve violence even though they’re enacting none. But I don’t think it’s impossible. I think some really evil people bank on everyone thinking such a person/situation is impossible.

And yeah, as a side note, said evil people could be women. I agree in almost any plausible situation anyone can come up with, even to the point of yelling, arguing, and slinging insults, violence is just about never justified, regardless of the person’s gender. But I will not say “never” - not 100.00% of the time.

I judge his words based on what he actually said instead of using them to make an entirely unrelated point justifying violence.

In no way does what he said about striking a woman for being disagreeable suggest he's talking about self defense.

These pictures are due to two things; genetics and lighting. Even though dude on right looks younger generally, if he was photographed in the same light as Connery they would look much closer in age.

You can see the shadow on the wall behind him. There is a light below his eyeline. That's called a beauty light, and it hides wrinkles by lighting the areas that would be in shadow from lights above.

But smoking also has a lot to do with it.

Connery’s stance on violence as a means of control, not self defense, is documented in a pretty famous Barbara Walters interview.

Connery: I think it depends entirely on the circumstances, and if it merits it.

Walters: What would merit it?

C: Well, if you have tried everything else. And- women are pretty good at this. They can’t leave it alone. They’ve got to have the last word, and you give them the last word. But they’re not happy with the last word. They want to say it again. And get into a really provocative situation. Then, I think it’s absolutely right.

You may not be familiar with all of this, which is entirely fair because it’s not reasonable to have watched every celebrity interview in history, but I would encourage you to watch it as context. He was inarguably talking about hitting women in his life to shut them up.

First time I saw that interview, I remember being shocked by how blunt and honest it was, because like most people I liked Connery as a movie star. He did not sanitize his opinions. Outside a card game with the boys on a Thursday night, you’re not going to hear a more honest endorsement of violence in a relationship.

I was gonna say, Thomas definitely looks younger here than Sean looks older

Sure but you can’t name many movies where a guy over 50 gets plenty. We all know that media beauty standards don’t hold up the same in reality. Large ladies getting plenty of action in reality being the most obvious example.

He very much did mean he beats women who annoy him.

1987, he elaborated on his quotes to Playboy. "I haven't changed my opinion... If you have tried everything else – and women are pretty good at this – they can't leave it alone. They want to have the last word and you give them the last word, but they're not happy with the last word. They want to say it again, and get into a really provocative situation, then I think it's absolutely right,"

Six years after THAT

"Sometimes there are women who take it to the wire. That's what they're looking for, the ultimate confrontation—they want a smack."

Stop trying to defend him, mythologise him or bring fcking self defense into this. It's disgusting

Well unlike Sir Connery, he at least is English! Though I think Connery impressed Fleming so much that Bond was rewritten to be half-Scottish But no, there has been no story published on the next Bond having been chosen yet. There are a lot of theories floating around and many of them are fairly unbelievable to the point that it may as well be perpetual teen guy.

Sir Sean

Part of it, I'm sure, is that Thomas has babyface. Part of it, too, is that people don't smoke cigarettes, or drink as much as they used to, or generally live as hard of lives. Living through the 2000s, for example, isn't really as complicated perhaps, or troubling, as living through the Great Depression and World War II and the Cold War.
