The main topic lies more on data retention after a person is deceased from stuff such as bank cards, driver's licenses, pay in 4 installments, PayPal account, social media presence, rental lease, etc. so does the privacy aspect of it become all public information for everyone to see since they consider their right to privacy rescinded as they are dead or will the person's relatives & close friends take ownership (via their estate)?

For instance, what happens if that individual still has remaining debt from After Pay with a catch: they're no longer alive to settle the remaining amount? They also have left over debt from their CC but the holder is dead. He or she may be an influencer with a large following, their recent post marks as a unofficial obituary as they're no longer posting any updates after (they're dead) but fans may say their condolences on the comments.

In terms of social media, should a dead person's account remain active (under the condition that a close friend or family member must take full ownership his or her account as their "digital" will) or be permanently closed (so the platform deletes it from their database, to avert hackers from impersonating them). What about his or her bank cards, passport or driver's license after their passing? Do they have any validity or is it rendered null?

You kidding me? I've yet to be convinced that most service providers dont even consider it valid post account deletion. That's pretty much a flag to release it to the training pool.

Depends on the country and the wealth of the individual.

Some countries respect privacy of the departed, some require active involvement from the estate and the rest don't care.

Social media is generally left abandoned if no one is around to actively close it down. There are millions, if not billions, of accounts floating around the internet with owners who have since passed away which are being stolen to be used for spreading malware.

However, official papers are generally nullified once a death certificate is issued. Plenty of cases where people mistakenly declared dead had all their stuff blocked off.

Let me answer what happens currently:

When a person is dead, trust & wills happens. Either someone is explicitly given ownership of the estate (often it is split between children) but if not, the estate forms it's own legal entity that operates to the best understanding of the decedents wishes.

With the accounts it's a bit more complicated but generally from what I know a lot of platforms offer to reassign an account if a death certificate is provided and a family member has come forward to request control. However in practice I would assume this only happens to the accounts that family members are aware of, and the rest of them basically become stale.

With regards to privacy, I would assume it is preserved for the most part. If relevant details about the decedent come up for legal reasons there might be some good cause to breach these but I can't imagine all person information gets revealed just because. Though I'm also not a lawyer, so take all of this with a grain of salt.

Asking legal questions without even telling where.

Bad case of US-defaultism probably. One of the sources of evil in the world :-(

But here is the answer in general, valid for my country, of course: When a person dies, the heir enters into all the rights and all the duties of the deceased (and then there are some exceptions, like many "platform" contracts having special clauses for it).

So I don't know many companies policies but let's say you were talking about Apple in the U.S. for an example. If you go to your Apple account, sign in and security and scroll down you'll find a section where you can add a legacy contact. This is supposed to be how you can grant access to your Apple Account pre-death without having to have the legacy contact present legal documents. Specific information will become accessible to that person as opposed to filing a the legal documents, see here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102431

It is quite common that someone will want to access pictures for a family member whom has died recently for say the funeral. If I'm honest, I think there is. 0% chance you will gain access to someone's account that quickly after death unless they are made a legacy contact, or you have access to one of their devices, know their passcode/phone number and have access to say their home wifi. (At which point you would be breaking into their account rather than gaining legal access but no one is going to fight it likely).

If you don't know their passcode, their iPhone/iPad would be rendered useless essentially, as they would have to be wiped to bypass it. But if they have their shit backed up to iCloud, the courts can grant you access to some information.

Yes you will need a death certificate, and such
