My best guess he thought it was empty, didn't want to pick it up, so tried to cram it under the shelf with the pallet-whatever-it's-called. Then felt betrayed that there was actually something in there like the idiot he is?

That's the conclusion my friends and I came to as well. You can see he definitely saw it.

What a dolt. What a maroon!

Edit: also that's an electric pallet jack.

From my work in retail, the box appears to be a typical corrugated cardboard food crate (usually used for some produce and bakery foods, but some other categories as well), and if that's true, that's probably some kind of food. Judging by what can be seen of the consistency, I think it might be some yogurt, pudding, buttercream, or something in that vein. So sticky, but prolly not harmful.

I think he is trying to push that cardboard into one of those warehouse cardboard compactor things.

Seems to me like he thought the pallet jack was meant to work like a spatula to scoop things up off the ground, and tried to force the box against something so it would stop sliding around and get on the jack.

It looks like mustard to me, like it had to be a fairly large container for that volume of stuff to erupt from it, and its fairly yellow, so unless its paint, I’m guessing a big mustard!
