Canada is making big strides toward a sovereign space capability.

Ukraine’s Starshield satellite terminals stopped working after a still-unexplained order came from inside the White House, and Canada has spent years quietly building its own military space network like radar satellites, Arctic communications, and its own rocket launch pads. I trace Canada’s RADARSAT constellation, its new Telesat Lightspeed Arctic network, and a government document that literally says the goal is to “augment and replace” America’s WGS system.

This is a great video not just about Canada but about all allies of the US right now needing to rethink space capability in the wake of Elon Musk's bullshit.

I'm intrigued by this Telesat Lightspeed project. Telesat's been around forever, but to my knowledge, this is the first time a Canadian company is legit looking at deploying a LEO communications constellation with over a hundred satellites.

By comparison, Starlink of course has thousands, and it's unlikely the Telesat network would be offering to your door Internet anytime soon. Part of it is gearing towards military applications, but if I'm understanding it correctly, the civilian side involves providing backbone connections to remote communities. So say you live in a remote arctic village. You might get a single high speed connection which is then distributed across a local cellular network.
